I have been using Vegas 4 for a year, rock solid no compliaints.

Recently, I added Sound Forge 7.0 and NS2.0. Now i can't see to render anything. I keep getting the aviplug.dll render exception.

Sony Vegas 4.0
Version 4.0e (Build 239)
Exception 0xC0000005 (access violation) READ:0xA9ACA4B0 IP:0x18342DE
In Module 'aviplug.dll' at Address 0x17F0000 + 0x442DE
Thread: Engine_RenderFromCookedSlices ID=0x320 Stack=0x255C000-0x2560000
....

Searching my system reveasl 4 versions of aviplug.dll

C:\Program Files\Screenblast\ACID 4.0\FileIO Plug-ins\aviplug
...\Sonic Foundry\DVD Architect 1.0\...
...\Sonic Foundry\Vegas 4.0\...
---\Sony\Sound Forge 7.0\...

They have different time/date stamps and file sizes. (10/23/2003 - 3/2/2004)

Could this somehow be causing my problem? Any suggestions to try?
Thanks!

Vegas 4 should be using its own AVI plug-in, other apps should use their own respective AVI plug-ins. Click About in the render dialog, should be pointing to the one in ...\Sonic Foundry\Vegas 4.0\FileIO Plug-Ins\...

Have you installed any new codecs? Or have you installed other plug-ins such as the frameserver plug-in? If so, try uninstalling them.

Thanks for the tip. UnInstalling SF7.0a and Screenblast ACID Express made no difference. Strangely, I couldn't render anything to completition, not PCA, WMA, AC3, DV-AVI or MPEG.

I did notice at first (before I started messing with things) that the render exception always occurred at the exact same frame. There is a small transient glitch on the time line, so I'm thinking something is wrong with the AVI file. I am stuffing it through some filtering using VDub, so I'll try that.

I don't remember doing anyting with CODECs, but that isn't worth much. If I don't write it down, I probably won't rememberit. I have "Ignore 3rd party DV codecs" checked, and "Use Microsoft DV codec" cleared.

are there problem codecs i should look for?

Cheers

This is a little weird, and the solution is not apparent. First, a bit of hstory.

The tape was 2 hrs Hi8, about 8 years old, input on a Digital8 Sony.

The timeline would play just fine. But every time I tried to render, no matter what, PCA,WMA, AC3, MP2, the aviplug.dll render exception popped up at frame 2319. There was an unexplained audio glitch on the timeline at that frame.

Suspecting SF 7.0a, I upgraded to 7.0b . No rendrer. Uninstall SF7.0b.

Next I ran the entire AVI through VDub with Smart Smootherm thinking that might clean up the AV, and maybe there was a problem with the original. No more problem. Renders just fine. Vegas complained about WaveHammer plug-in missing, so maybe that was the problem.

Just to check, I switched back and to the original avi and surprise -- renders just fine, blows right past frame 2319. Vegas still complains about WaveHammer missing.

For final test, re-install SF7.0B and render original file. No complaints about WaveHammer missing, and blows right past frame 2319.

Only thing I can figure is something went wrong with the first SF7.0a install. This was one of those mysterious problems that was cleaned up by uninstall / install.
