Drop shadow on image overlay

sonicvision wrote on 8/10/2024, 2:06 PM

Why can't a simple drop shadow effect be added to image in Vegas. I tried this in Vegas 19 and 22 and adding the stock Vegas Drop Shadow (or BorisFX) effect doesn't work. Doing this in Davinci Resolves works fines (with Resolve and Boris versions) as does in Vegas Effects using the stock one (not the Boris one). Seems a simple thing apparently not.

Yes, I have tried Layer Dimensionality but it doesn't have as much controls as the other Drop Shadow effect options do. I also know about the Track Motion option, which works but isn't always best option depending on what's happening on the track.

@3POINT positioning of shadow primarily. As I mentioned in my post, Layer Dimensionality has limited options. No matter what I try I can't get shadow lower, or far, as I want, whereas the other effect options have more control but unfortunately don't work at all in Vegas.

Move the crosshair in the preview-window to the position were lightsource for shadow should be postioned.

@Gid here are examples of my attempts using BFX, NBFX, and Magix Layer Dimensionality in VP and BFX and stock Resolve in Resolve. My point is none work in Vegas other than Layer Dimensionality but that is limited (I can't get a low/distant shadow).

@sonicvision  It's because you're using Track Motion to reduce your image not Pan/Crop. Try a combination of both, reduce the size of your image using Pan/Crop first, add drop shadow, then enlarge/shrink it using Track Motion.

@sonicvision Just add PIPFX to your image and use that for resizing, like I did in my first example.

make sure the Layer dimensionality drop shadow FX is last FX in the FX chain.

Thank you both, @Gid and @3POINT . I have usually avoided Pan & Crop due to things getting cut off (which I found occurring in @3POINT 's PIP/Layer Dim suggestion too) but I will experiment with both of these and see how I make out going forward. Cheers!

Could you explain further?

sonicvision wrote on 8/11/2024, 4:49 PM

@3POINT trying your suggestion more today and better result. Not sure why the LD wasn't previously moving like it is today but now it's shadow is able to be positioned as expected, and using the PIP I can move the image to where I want, no issue. Interestingly, if I try to use Boris or New Blue Drop Shadows in your scenario, rather than LD, they both will cut off if moved to either left or right side of screen (see screenshot).

.

My past (and current) issues (that I have seen others express same problem with) is that Pan & Crop tends to cut off image/video depending where you move it (similar to what is shown in screenshot). I had been told by others to avoid this (seemingly common issue) to either use Track Motion or PIP.

As it currently stands, @3POINT 's method works best but the issue of neither Boris nor NewBlue Drop Shadow effects working remains.

When using Pancrop to achieve the Picture in Picture and to avoid cutting off, just change with right mouse click the aspect ratio of the Pancrop to "Match out aspect", before starting resizing and moving the image. Then no need to use also trackmotion.

@sonicvision To avoid manually changing aspect ratio of Pancrop when importing pictures/videos with other aspect ratio as project, you can change this to do automatically in the preferences:

For quick and easy creating and placing PIP's directly in the preview window, I prefer the PIPFX as shown in my first example, but therefor you better leave the above mentioned setting in preferences unchecked.

Layer Dimensionality FX can do even a lot more than just adding a drop shadow...it can turn a logo into a 3D like button when using different embossing settings. I just miss a border FX setting, which would make this Layer Dimensionality FX even more useful.
