Dropouts in rendered video

I did a capture using USB Instant DVD, at 3 Mb/sec. I rendered at 5 Mbs/sec (VV3 - what a great tool!) All the other settings were the same (aspect, MPEG-2, etc.). Every few seconds, I get a dropout to a black screen for a couple of frames. Is this to be expected? I know it is desirable to capture and render to the same format, but I'm surprised that this would include the codec bit rate. Comments?

p.s. I really enjoy this forum, and I've learned a lot from the experienced people here.

There were a couple of recent threads that might apply.

If you originally captured to mpeg2, particularly with another codec (not main concept), then re-rendered to mainconcept, this could be the source of your problem. Try rendering to another format to be sure. The next version of the mainconcept encoder might help if I remember the earlier postings correctly.

BTW, not much point in re-rendering mpeg2 at a much higher bitrate usually, unless you've added fx or transitions in VV3, as mpeg2 is a lossy compression. The lower the bitrate, the more original information you lose, and once lost, rendering at a higher bitrate will not recover it - you'll get the same picture taking up more space.

Thanks, Mike, for the reply. A clarification: I didn't render at 5 to try and improve things, because as you say that isn't possible. Most of my caps are at 5 Mbs/sec. I made a mistake and made a couple at 3. The whole project renders at 5. When I saw the dropouts, I tested a bit and found the 3-to-5 issue.
