dropped frames while capturing w/ Windows XP

I have an AMD K7 550 mhz system with 512 mb of ram.
I had been running Windows ME, but my system crashed, so I updated to XP.
Eventhough my computer is slow, it captured video fine while I was running ME, but now that i'm running XP, it starts dropping frames after about the first 10 mins of video. Is there anything I can do, or should I try reinstalling ME?
Thanks,
Andy

Do you have DMA enabled for the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers? Checkout its advanced tab from Device Manager.

Sorry to jump into this thread blindly like this but I may be having a related problem. I upgraded my machine (Pentium 4, 1.3 GHz, 256 MB RAM, 40 GB HD) to XP (and ended up spending multi hundreds of dollars more to replace programs and devices) but after downloading the updated VidioFactory 2.0 c things seemed to work fairly well for a while. Then I made the mistake of changing the filing system from FAT32 to NTFS. I THINK that was my mistake. My videos started to look very jerky and the audio portion picked up horrible snaps and pops. Now I can't seem to write my edited video back to my DV camera (Panasonic)either. The process starts for a split second and then stops (although the camera goes on its merry way recording nothing. I changed to NTFS because I thought it would be more stable and handle large files but I recent learned that NTFS slows down the hard drive. Is that true? Do you think it is NTFS that is screwing up VideoFactory? Would adding a second drive with the FAT32 fix up my problem? Thanks for any coments anybody might have.
