How is your dedicated drive connected?

Assuming it is an internal drive, does it share a ribbon cable with your C drive? If so, make sure you're using an 80-wire ribbon in order to allow for the extra data flow. Also, make sure that the two drives are set up as master and slave by setting the jumpers, not simply through the software.

If, on the other hand, your secondary hard drive is hooked up to the same ribbon cable as your CD-ROM, note that your CD-ROM will act as a master and will slow your hard drive data flow down to its slower data flow speed.

Beyond that, how fast is your processor and how much RAM do you have? Also, are you using WindowsXP? SP2? And what virus software are you using?

I have now noticed that the DMA is not enable (SORRY)and I can't seem to get it to change. the current transfer mode is PIO mode but I have it set for DMA if availible. Ihave tried uninstalling the drive then reinstalling it.. it still will not change

yes it is an internal drive and it does share the same cable as the c: drive. the ribbon is the one that came with the second drive. I have them set up for cable select should I change that to master and slave?
I am using win XP home with SP2 I have disable the antivirus while trying to record video.. but I am using Norton internet security 2005.
I have a P4 3.0Ghz with 512 ram

ok i fixed it.. I went into setup, and the primary master was on auto, but the primary slave ( the second drive) was off. I set that to auto and now it works. not sure why it was off, nor why I was able to use the drive for storage, but it works right now. Thanks for your help.

Thanks for sharing your solution, Dan. It will be very helpful next time this problem comes around (and it often does).

By "setup" you mean you went into the BIOS setup, right? Pressing ESC when you get the logo screen during bootup? Just making sure.

Regardless glad to hear you're back in the game!
