Dual DVI + HDMI output video card recommendations?

entilza72 wrote on 10/6/2012, 7:34 PM
Hi guys,

Looking to improve my edit suite and workflow. I'm thinking of dual DVI outputs to run the Vegas windows split over 2 monitors, plus a full HDMI feed to display the output on a dedicated LCD "television" monitor.

I've seen on discussions here that most cards with 3 outputs will not be able to run all 3 at full res simultaneously.

Does anyone have a recommendation?

Thanks,
Ent.

If the above doesn't ring a bell with anyone ... can I use two video cards and arrive at the same outcome? (2 extended windows desktops, 1 video output monitor)

Any help appreciated.

The new Nvidia 6 series cards support 3 simultaneous outputs. I just got the Gigabyte 650--the bottom of the line. It has two DVI,s 1 HDMI and 1 VGA. I've run three at a time--don't know about 4. There's been some discussion on the forum of compatibility issues with Vegas due to the new Kepler architecture, but it seems to work OK for me for a speed-up in rendering AVC, but not timeline performance (actually worse, so I turn off GPU in the Preferences).

Hi wwaag,

Thanks for your post.

Interesting point about the series 6 card. Do you think you're getting reduced performance because you bought a card that has less power than your previous one? Or just some kind of Vegas issue?

Thanks for the tip-off, but the compatibility thing is worrysome (the last think I need is MORE issues with Vegas!). I might explore the twin card possibility if anyone has some advice? Can I output 3 displays over 2 cards?

Gents, there is a post on the forum in the Q&A's that states that SVP will only use one graphics card to render via GPU. I am thinking going the same route, running three or four monitors, but there is no speed advantage gained.
Also, make sure the architechture is CL2.0 or better. The nVidia FX6000 series is good.

Hi Red,

This raises an interesting point - whilst my question was purely about getting 3 differing video outputs from a card for display purposes (2 extended desktop outputs, and 1 video only), it does raise the question of:

Which video card will SVP use to render?

Will it pick the fastest one? Or will it pick the first one it saw when it installed? Or some other metric?

(Still waiting for some kind sole to confirm too if Vegas will use 2 cards to display - 2x desktop on one card, 1x video only on the second).

How about a BMD Intensity ?
The you can have two monitors from the one video card for the desktop or T/L and the third from the intensity as your external monitor.

I run two monitors from a single GFX card (nVidia GTX 550Ti) and have a Blackmagic Intensity Pro card for HDMI video output; works fine (well, apart from GPU acceleration which always crashes but that's a Vegas issue I think)

If I were upgrading my graphics adapter I would ensure it had the new "Display Port" as well as DVI and HDMI. This seems to be the way to go. Very few monitors have the "Display Port" port but prepare for the future id your going to spend that much bucks.

Display port = http://www.displayport.org/faq/

Another thing to look out for is at the back of graphics adapter is 2 ports that look like DVI, but one is DVI-D and one is DVI.

Hi guys,

Thanks for all your information.

After reading the above, and then going off to do some research, I settled on the Black Magic Intensity Pro to run the video monitor only, leaving the original GPU card to continue running my dual display windows desktop (and hopefully allowing Vegas to continue to use its GPU without crashing!).

Thanks again - love the quality of support our fellow SVP users offer here.

"Which video card will SVP use to render"

There is a setting in the Preferences > Video tab to pick the card used for "GPU acceleration of video processing."

"wondering ... if Vegas will use 2 cards to display - 2x desktop on one card, 1x video only on the second"

The Preferences > Preview Device tab gives an option to use "Device: Windows Graphics Card" which then let's you pick which display to use. I would assume it matches however many displays Windows itself has. Windows is designed to support up to 10 monitors (assuming adequate graphics cards to drive them).
