dual monitor question

Simple question - thinking of going dual monitors any day now, but just want to know if I will be able to use one of the monitors exclusively for my timelines, and have everything else (media generators, video effects, etc.) including the preview window, on the other one?
I have 2 monitors now, but one of them is networked to a second computer so can't use it for editing. Read some of the other posts concerning duals and I think all questions were answered there except this.

Ummmm, on my 2.6GHz? Pretty danged poor. Maybe somewhere around 0.5fps.

My Dell ran out of room for any more PCI cards.... that's why I was wondering about some kind of video/splitter....
I'm dreaming of a new machine now....any advice on what to build into it for 3-4 monitors?

... seems you're cooked, unless you go with the 750 card by Matrox. A little expensive though, but it would work. Have a look:

The P650, I heard, can make it too with a special adapter and it's a lil' bit cheaper but I don't have the price for the adapter.
