Dual monitor window layout problem

TeetimeNC wrote on 8/25/2009, 7:47 AM
Using Vegas 9.0a. I have three window layouts I regularly use with my dual monitor system. On my secondary monitor, all of the layouts have suddenly shifted up so that the title bar for the upper most window is off the monitor. AFAIK, the only way to move this window back onto the monitor is to grab it by the title bar - which I can't do because it is off monitor. Is there another way to move a window back on-monitor if you don't have access to the title bar?

I realize I can just redefine the window layout, but this has happened before and it is a bit of an aggravation to have to redefine these repeatedly.

Yes, you can do this blind with keyboard shortcuts.

Click on the window to make sure it has the focus and then take your hands off the mouse
Press Alt+Spacebar
Press down arrow once and then press return. Your window should get a border indicating it's ready to move.
Use your arrow keys to move the window down.

I used to have this problem with a laptop that I'd use with a second monitor at work. Away from work I might not have the second monitor attached but some programs would still open in that screen space.

Some Linux Window managers have a key combination that allows you to grab a window anywhere and move it. That'd be handy in this situation.

Aha, another geek-magic trick! Did as suggested.
Thanks, Rob, t'will definitely come in handy :)

My less elegant work-around for this kind of problem, including floating toolbars I move too far has been to temporarily change the resolution of my desktop/monitor to something higher so everything fit into view.

This Alt-Spacebar thing is much more sensible.

Yah.

Alt+Spacebar is just the keyboard shortcut that opens the top-left window menu of every window in Windows. One of the many shortcuts that are worth knowing. I hope they're still there in Vista and Win7

Rob, mine is a Vista 64. So yes, the keyboard trick definitely works for Vista.

In case that menu changes order, or some utilities install other options, you can press M to access the Move command instead of using the down arrow.

Good point. You can also practice first on a window you can see. That's what I had to do before writing down the steps here.
