On screen one i have eveything except the preview monitor. I set the two screens up to span horizontally. Size the entire VV window to fit the left monitor and then drag the preview monitor window onto the righ hand monitor. Works a treat UNTIL I go back to regular windows and apps but then I just switch back to single monitor.
Same here....I have set up my second monitor for the preview window - and maybe some of the tools I use a lot of and always want to have handy (like the media generator).
It just frees up my main screen for doing the editing, tweeaking, frameXframe work and such without having to constantly move stuff around.
Of course....when I go back to other apps I have to remember to turn off the other monitor and go back to single mode. Some of my apps won't work with both monitors turned on. But that's not a big deal.
I preview to an external NTSC monitor, so I have a slightly different setup. I put the Media Pool, Explorer, Mixer and Preview Windows (all free-floating) on my 17" monitor (on the left side).
On the right side, I have the Vegas main window with the Timeline set up to fill the 19" monitor screen. In the docking area, I have Edit Details on top, with Video Generators, Video FX and Transitions docked underneath. All other windows (Video Scopes, etc.), I only turn on when I need them. If I'm working with a lot of tracks, I'll turn on the preferences option to hide the docking area. This way, I can maximize the real estate devoted to the tracks, but still have access to critical controls on the 17" monitor.
The only thing that sucks is that (at least with my ATI Radeon VE on W2k Pro), Vegas doesn't remember where the free-floating windows should go. I have to move them back where I want them every time I start the program.
Try a program called UltraMon (ultramon.com) You can try it for 30 days free. I'm running the ATI Radeon 9800 and this little program is indispensible.
i second that ultramon is a must. i only thing i wish vegas did was allowed me to re-dock my windows on the seconary monitor. i haven't found a way to do that.
I use the 1st monitor for the timeline and clip bins and explorer window. On the second monitor I have the preview window, transitions, media generators, scopes, and video FX. I find if you have everything set up there is really no need to Dock the windows because when I close vegas and open it up again all the windows are exactly where I left them so there is no need to re-arrange them once I re-open the program.
Thanks for the tip. I checked out the website and it looks interesting. Do you run it instead of, or together with, ATI's Hyrdravision utility? Any conflicts/comparisons with the standard ATI stuff? Any performance/resources hit from leaving it running in the background?
I don't think you'd want them to run together. I just tried HydraVison and I much prefer UltraMon. The only thing HydraVison has over Ultramon is the multiple desktops. Ultramon also manages your wallpapers and screensavers.
