Dual monitors with Vegas Video 3.0 - HELP!

gnfoster wrote on 8/9/2002, 10:54 PM
I can't figure out how to undock the video preview, media pool, explorer, or several others so that I can move them to my second monitor screen. Some of the Views such as the plug-ins or the edit details will float and then can be moved over, but what about the video preview and others?

Thanks.

Video Vegas 3.0
AMD Athlon 900
2- 40 GB
512 MB
Hercules Prophet 64MB main display
Matrox Millenium 4MB secondary display

Click around the verticle bar that is to left of the preview window and hold the left mouse button down while moving the mouse. The window will undock it from its current location and you can move it to your other monitor.

I tried that over and over. It only slides to the left and right. There is an X to close it and an arrow < or > to fill the pane or dock to the side. I tried to close it and open again from the view menu, but it puts it right back in the bottom panes.

I don't get it.

THere is the border that separates the preview monitor from the adjoining item (the levels meter in VV's default configuration). Dragging this will keep the video preview docked where it is, but will change the amount of space it takes up width-wise. But just pixels to the right of the border, is a distinct beveled 'ridge' which is much thinner than the border. If you point to that specifically and drag, you'll soon see a square marquee moving with your mouse - representing that you are undocking or relocating the video preview. Move your mouse to the desired destination and release, and the video preview should end up where you may.

it is a vertical bar (on the left) that runs the length of the window
just click and drag anywhere on that vertical bar to dock and undock it

I recall there is a setting in the Matrox display tools that can keep the preview from undocking properly... it will somtimes move from one pane or another but not float free...

It's something like snap new window to edge, or center, or something like that. I'd check those if you still have trouble.

For future searchers the vertical bar to drag is at the left of each pane under the x for close and the expand arrow:

....and that bar is static. When you move your mouse over it, it doesn't highlite, emboss, glow or give any indication that it does anything. It looks like a divider and not a handle. I had this same problem figuring out how to undock VV3 panels, and felt sort of dumb afterwards.

As for it working, if your dual monitors are being driven properly and are working okay, then you really should be able to undock and drag those panels wherever needed. Makes for more pleasant editing. I use a Matrox G550 Dualhead with two 17" heaters. I've got a new Matrox G550 Dual DVI waiting for when I can afford a couple of LCD's. Hope your problem is fixed.

I tried that three times and it did nothing. Finally on the fourth try I did it right. Yesterday I was trying the divider bar and that's what confused me.

Thanks for everybody'd help in this. The dual monitors are so handy for many different situations. I'm even going to hook up a second at work for use with AutoCAD.

You're right, I feel kinda dumb now too.

Thanks again everybody!
