Duplicate Tracks

I want to copy an audio track so my edited master is untouched while I process effects on a slave track (the duplicate). If all works, the duplicate will become my master. Otherwise I can revert to my original. But - when I duplicate, the copy follows the master, that is, if I mute the master, the copy (slave) mutes. Whats up here? Thanks

When you duplicate the track, the orginal and duplicate are both selected, so when you mute or solo they both mute and solo. Click on the track header of the track you want to affect and then only that track will be selected and you should be all set.
