DV Codec in Vegas 4.0b

cmerail wrote on 4/24/2003, 2:04 AM
I just purchased vegas 4.0b. I have had experience with prem 6.0, but I am making the switch to vegas to see if I like it better. Anyway one of the major questions I was wondering about vegas was the codec that it uses. That is I don't know what codec it uses. Do they make there own codec that is automatically used when capturing or do they use the microsoft codec. Are there better codecs available that are compatible with vegas 4.0b.
Also how does the vegas capturing utility compare with scenalyzer live, which I also have been using in the past. I am hoping people are finding vegas to be an extremely well developed program and that it is not neccessary for external ones. Thank you.

Have a look at this thread which answers part of your question concerning codec:

Re Scenalyzer live - I too used to use this program with Premiere V5.1, 6.0 and 6.5 but since switching to Vegas I just use the capture faciltiy in Vegas.

I read that thread. I am still confused as to which codec sonicfoundry uses. Does it use microsofts or its own?

If I remember correctly, Vegas uses the MainConcept DV codec (if not, then Sonic Foundry created its own). I know one thing for sure, however-- it does NOT use the crappy Microsoft DV codec.

Vegas uses the SF DV codec by default (written from scratch, in house).

If I capture using Scenalyzer instead of the Vegas capture,
what am I losing? Is there a way to use SF DV codec with
Scenalyzer? The reason I ask. On my main computer,
trying to capture with Vegas (Running VV4b) my
computer always crashes. But I can capture with
Scenalyzer just fine.

You are losing NOTHING. The codec only comes into play when you RENDER - and then only in the sections that change.

When you do capturing DV. No codec is use.
The process merely transfering the dv file from your camcorder to the
hard disk.

The codec is involved when you render your files from the time-line as output.

Thanks jetdv & Lawrence. Now another question.
Capturing 24PA from DVX-100. The SoFo guy
said you should use scene detection
because of the way they handle pulldown.
I usually use scene detection anyway.
Does the Vegas capture utility handle
scene detection differently than
scenealyzer.
