Sorry to be a little off toppic, but....

What do others think about the crappy deal us folk in europe (UK) get when it comes to getting a Camcorder with DV in working?

What's going on here? why do they disable this essensial feature on lower end Camcorders??? If you ask me, their just creating another market for other company's to enable them with a "Crack" on a floppy disk for the cost of around £40!!!

This is absolute crap, and just another example of us folk in the UK getting ripped off some more.

What do you think?

What I've heard is that if a DV camera can record, it would be taxed differently (meaning higher tax), and that's why DV in is disabled in many PAL cameras. We ran into this when buying PAL DV test cameras from European distributors.

Many of those same PAL cameras, by the way, can be found in the US with DV in, so its not like the cameras are not capable of recording.

You can actually build a simple little gadget for about $5.00 in parts that plugs into your computers serial port, your camcorders LANC input, and after running a little program on a floppy you can enable DV in. Do a web search on Martin Smola, he's the guy who wrote the software and has links on his site to the plans for the widget, as well as other programs that'll let you enable/disable many strange and wonderous functionalities on your camcorder.

This seems to be a relevant article. It includes instructions, links for
software, circuit diagrams, and even options to purchase the necessary
cable ready-made.
