DV50 is basically the DV codec with twice the data rate (50mbps vs 25mbps.) It also uses 4:2:2 color sampling vs 4:1:1 for DV. Vegas does not have a built-in DV50 codec. MainConcept sells a very nice VFW-compatible DV50 codec which works great in Vegas and costs $368. DV, DVPRO25 and DVPRO50 are all SD formats.

Installing DVFilm's Raylight will allow you to use the free Matrox DV50 codec as well. Raylight is available at several price points, depending on your needs.

To go even deeper... is there a FREE DV50 Codec that can be downloaded?

I saw a link to Matrox's FREE DV50 Codec... but the page is no longer available.

I saw a link to Matrox's FREE DV50 Codec... but the page is no longer available.

I grabbed the VFW software codec pack from the Matrox site a long time ago.
codecs.zip is the YouSendIt link (good for 7 days).
This installs the Matrox DV/DVCAM, DVCPRO, DVCPRO50, M-JPEG and MPEG-2 I-Frame codecs on your system.
Select AVI as the render type, then click Custom > Video > Video format.
They'll show up in the dropdown box.
I don't have any way of confirming that the DVCPRO 50 codec works so you're on your own.

Rainman, the link I gave is to a zipped file.
Unzip it and double-click the codecs.exe file.
This brings up an install screen that has "Matrox VFW Software Codec Setuo 7.1.0.3213" on the top of it.
Follow the on-screen directions.
I've got both Vegas 7 & Vegas Pro 8 on my home computer and all the new codecs showed up after installation of this codec.

I just purchased a clip using DVCPRO50 this week. And of course, I can't read it. The original author suggested I get Final Cut Pro. Which isn't gong to happen. Neither is paying $300 so I can read a $50 clip.

I emailed Panasonic about a DVCPRO50 codec and they sent me to this link. https://eww.pavc.panasonic.co.jp/pro-av/support/desk/e/download.htm
Anyone have a clue what I should try and download?

Or can we get a new link to those DVCPRO50 codecs earlier in the thread?

So I got a second response from Panasonic (by telephone) and the guy said they didn't offer a Windows codec, that he knew of, which would work with Vegas Pro. He basically said they push the job off on secondary companies like Apple and others.

Matrox used to have the DVCPro codec available as free download and judging by the number of times people asked about it here and were sent of to the Matrox site to get it I can only assume it worked OK with Vegas.

Problem now is that Matrox have reoriganised their site and I can't find it there. MainConcept offer one, for a price though.

A quick Google did find a "Codec Pack" that claims to include the DVCPro 50 one. Proceed with caution as installing all the codecs in the pack could lead to codec confusion.

That's the problem I'm having. None of the old links seem to work. So I'm wondering why hasn't Sony built a codec for this camera yet. Seems like it's the most popular format for 10bit storage.

DVCPro 50 isn't that popular compared to Digital Betacam. As far as I know it's only 8 bit at 4:2:2.
You should be able to capture either over SDI into Vegas just fine with a basic Decklink card and the right VCR.
