WARNING:

The DVD-A burner portion of the software SUCKS! I went out and bout Sony DVD+R disc for my DVD+RW Sony drive thinking surely I would run into no problems seeing how the burner and media are manufactored by the same company. After 3 toasters I was pissed @ the sony DVD+R thinking they were some crap and was about to package them up and take them back to Best Buy but then! I decided to try for a 4th time using Nero to burn my DVD-A project and it worked beautifuly!

WARNING: Don't use DVD-A Burner portion of the software it sucks!

And in other news, a company called Microsoft is working on some program called "Windows."

(Translation: Yeah, we know.)

Sony Pictures (who sells Vegas and DVDA) is a part of Sony, but they are pretty much a seperate entity, so you can't really say they are the same company.

DVDA has always had fairly poor support for burning. Frankly I think that they should simply accept that fact that they aren't going to be able to support every burner out there without some serious effort, pull burning out of DVDA entirely and team up with someone like Nero or VSO to provide the burning part.

wow....i wasn't even talking about DVD-A but matter a fact your right they are all made by sony!

I find this burner support problem to be a major system architecture problem. They way it is supposed to work is the hardware company provides a device driver that adheres to a standard with the OS. The software vendor then communicates with the device VIA the standard interface in the OS.

The OS via the hal (hardware abastraction layer) and device driver sends the hardware the commands/data needed. The applications should really only be saying "open device A for write - write data xyz - verify data - write more...." The application should not care who's device it is, nor need device specific commands.

Seems something has gone really wrong with DVD burner's.

I hear you man...it's getting way too proprietary to the point where all of the companies are just confusing the consumers.

what you said was well put what you said...can't really paraphrase it...you are on a higher geek level than me but! I did understand every bit of it.

CD-Rs was never this difficult.

Sony didn't design DVDA, Sonic Foundry did. Sony designed their burners (I think) and they have not been problem free any more than many of their consumer electronics have been. I burn all my DVD's using DVDA 1.0 and two different Pioneer burners (104 and 105) and they burn perfectly. I burn at 1x using either Media ID: TYG01 or Ritek G04 and never have a problem.

John,

Where do you get your Taiyo Yuden? I've always used Maxell for critical, long term archiving and Ritel G04 for distribution, and this has worked perfectly (zero returns, zero coasters). However, the "buzz" on G04 quality decline has me a little concerned and I'm thinking about switching to TYG01.

John,
First of all, Maxell has at least 6 different companies that manufacture their discs including Taiyo Yuden, so I am not sure what DVD Identifyer shows your discs to be.

Ritek G04 had a brief interlude of problems around a year ago, but seems to be back to being as reliable as they used to be.

For Taiyo Yuden I buy 4x Fujifilm discs, but they must say Made In Japan on the package. For awhile you could only get Fujifilm 4x DVD-R discs that were made by Taiyo Yuden by buying 5 packs or 10 packs. The spindles said Made In Taiwan and were being produced by CMC Magnetics (one of the worst). Now the spindles of 4x DVD-R discs say Made In Japan and will ID as Taiyo Yuden (TYG01)
If your Maxell discs have been reliable I would guess that they ID either TYG01 or one of the MCC codes (Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation).

The 8x discs have been less reliable across the board and since I only burn at 1x or 2x maximum, I have stuck with 4x media and never have problems with them (either Ritek G04 or TYG01).

Perhaps you're teasing, but I gather he meant "coasters"...

John,

You never mentioned where you get your media. It sounds like you purchase at retail.

My Maxells are 2x media that I purchased in large quantity over a year ago, when I knew they wouldn't be making them much longer. They are in jewell cases, and the media has the Maxell logo. The ID is:

MXL RG01

This was the media the Ralph Labarge declared the most compatible in the only real media test ever publicly released.

Sorry John,
I didn't realize you were using older media. That was good media. Unfortunately, Ralph hasn't kept up with the times. I still don't see him posting on the DV forums anything regarding media ID, and the participants in the forum he moderates still don't get it when it comes to the outsourcing issue. They still discuss "brands" as if one could go by that.

I purchase my Fujifim discs at BJs wholesale club. BJs has all Fujifim media. When they have had coupons for it I have purchased VHS tapes for as low as $.35 each.
Back when I was forced to buy 5 and 10 packs I got them on sale at BestBuy, etc. Primarily, however I am using Ritek G04 particularly when I need white inkjet printable media. When I use regular media I neatly print around the inside hub with a Sharpie and do a nice DVD jacket. For regular media I use either Ritek G04 (Ridata) or Fuji (TYG01). I have also purchased from Amazon.com when they have rebates or sales or I can use a coupon to get them cheaper (with free shipping of course)

John,

Many thanks!

I periodically search on Ralph's name to see if he has released any more results. He hasn't. I think he still does his tests, but does them under contract to various manufacturers. Since they pay for the results, they are not his to post, or even discuss. He sometimes posts over at dv.com, where he moderates a board.

John,
Yes that is where I read his posts. He is the moderator of the DVD forum on that site.
I am really upset about what is happening on the Vegas Video forum. I never thought I would see the day when something like that would happen here. I love these forums.

John
