The success rate is climbing daily. I'd say that these days there's probably well over 95% chance that your disc will play on any player. I can't guarantee it though. Some older players don't like DVD-R, some don't like DVD+R, some just don't like recordable discs at all.

With a DVD you can have menus, scene selection, special features, multiple sound tracks and camera angles, and all that fun stuff. You can also put nearly 2 hours of video on a single layer disc. An MPEG 2 file on a CD will have none of those features, not even chapters, and it will be limited to about 20 minutes or so, depending on how poor quality you can put up with.
