DVD Architect "Space Used" issue

CraigF wrote on 4/2/2003, 8:09 AM
I posted this on the Vegas Cow forum, and no one had an answer.

I finally have V4+DVD, and created my first DVD with it last night. The workflow is definitely better with V4+DVD than with VideoFactory2/TMPGEnc/BeSweet/DVDWorkshop SE. But enough about that...

I created a new project in DVD Architect, picked the Wedding Theme, and dropped "wedding.mpg" onto the menu. I thought "wedding.ac3" would automatically be associated, but it wasn't. I navigated into the video object, and video set to "wedding.mpg" and audio was set to "wedding.mpg". The Disc spaced used was 3.5GB. I changed the audio to "wedding.ac3" and the spaced used jumped to 7.0GB. I deleted the audio reference completely and it was still 7.0GB I set the audio back to "wedding.mpg" and size went back to 3.5GB. I went ahead and prepared the DVD and the audio was compressed to AC3.

So what did I do wrong, or is this a bug? I'm using 1.0a.

BTW, the mpg and ac3 files were both rendered from the timeline in V4.

Thanks!

Craig

DVD Architect automatically merges videos that have the same audio and video source together so it's only put on the disc once. When you change the audio, you are only changing it for the one link. So, there will be two instances of the video being put on the disc -- one using the old MPEG audio and one using the new MPEG audio source. That's why it goes from 3.5 GB to 7.0 GB. In order to only have one instance put on the disc, you need to change the audio source for every link to the video.

Which means unless I'm missing something... if you have a project where you change the audio from MPEG-2 to AC3 and you have 50 chapters, you need to manually change the source of the audio FIFTY times, once for each chapter. This obviously requires a lot of steps to do. :-(

Maybe in the next version there could be some kind of pre configuration window that pops up everytime you drop a file on the menu where you can specify WHAT to use for a particular video. It's been awhile, I think TMPGEnc does this.

Agreed. When you replace audio that is found in several locations in a project, it would be nice to have an option to replace all instances.

I just tested this. You don't HAVE to change the link info for each chapter if you are using the automated scene selection menu feature. I took my project, specified the AC3 file for the main video link. Sure enough, the space used jumped to 7GB. I deleted the scene selection menu and the space used dropped to 3.5GB. I added a new scene selection menu and the space used was still 3.5GB.

Problem solved. Thanks Steve.

Sure, you can delete and then create a new scene selection menu. I have done this. What troubles me is that, since I had changed the scene selection menu page from the default, I had to recreate all of the changes manually. Did I miss something?

Is there a way to apply the "look and feel" of my other menu pages automatically, kind of like a template?

I agree; this did NOT work for ME!

If I drag a clip onto a menu with a PLAY ALL link, and then create a series of chapter submenus which work from the SAME clip, them I change the audio for the master clip, I still have to go to EVERY SINGLE chapter link and change the audio over manually, which is only marginally faster than recreating all of the menus by hand.

A global replace feature of some kind would sure be apprecaited.
