dvd burner kicking drive offline

my sony dvd burner is chained with an external drive thru firewire. when the dvd burner is on, it occationally knocks the external drive offline. this hasn't happened yet during a burn, but i haven't burned many dvds yet and worried that it could. any suggestions? i could burn via usb2 instead of keeping the burner in the firewire chain, but would there be a loss of burn speed?

It has been my experience that the DVD burner should be on an IDE chain if at all possible. While firewire and usb2 are very convenient, I have had much greater success with IDE.

I have experienced that problem in the past. What I usually do now is to click on the icon in the "Task tray" that says 'unplug or eject hardware' and select that device to be disconnected. After I get the OK prompt, the CD/RW drive is basically off line...however, I still leave it powered on as it is in the firewire daisey chain. Hope that will work for you.
