OK team, My Dell has flaked on me. I have a Dell 8200 with XP. Before I call dell , and have some level 1 dude destroy all my current settings, has anyone out there ever have their DVD rom drive suddenly start ignoring DVD'd??? It will play Music CD's, read data discs, even play MPegs I made, but will not even acknowledge orig DVD's for playback. The only odd change I made in the past month was add Interactual Player for expanded dvd use. (A dvd said I needed it). Did this hose something? I tried manually playing DVD's with both power DVD and Win DVD, with no luck. Ideas? The dell trouble shooter was a waste of time too. the_ripper

Can you read (i.e. explorer etc) the DVD? or is it just that it wont 'Play' the DVD?

Which player software are you using? Could be the added software conflicted with dvd software. Try uninstalling Interactual Player and reinstalling. If no joy try reinstalling initial software over Interactual Player.

Good luck.

Yes, I've had almost exactly the same problem with a Dell Dimension, but I can't remember exactly what sort of drive it was (NEC of some sort). Bottom line was Dell replaced the drive and it's been fine ever since. The acid test was to boot the pc to DOS with CD support (from a floppy). The problem was still there, so it had to be hardware.

FWIW, Dell tech support was excellent on that occassion!

Cheers
