DVD encoding Vegas 3 and Nero

If I can take you all back in time a bit. I am using Vegas 3 with Win 98SE and FAT32 with the 3.99Gb (19 minutes approx) file size problem.
I am trying to produce a DVD without gaps in it.
If I go to Tools Burn CD/ video CD then I can make an MPEG 1 disk from the timeline in Vegas 3. OK
If I render to avi I have 3 avi files .If I use Nero to burn to DVD it uses the 3 avi files as chapters and there is a very noticeable pause as it jumps from the end of one to the start of the next.
Is there a setting in Vegas 3 that will allow me to make a single MPEG 2 compliant file that I can get Nero to work with.
Please do not tell me to upgrade to XP. I would have to replace the PC and that is not in the budget at the moment.
Thanks all.

I'd give you the answer, but you asked me not to.

How long is your video? Is it possible to use a bit rate low enough that the resulting MPEG 2 file would be under 4GB? I would think this could be a possible solution up to maybe 90 or 100 minutes, depending on your material. You wouldn't be missing that much space on the disc. The menues and other extra items would still be able to fit in the space that the main 4GB file doesn't use.

OK, I'll tell you anyway.

"the largest file that can exist on Fat32 (Windows 9x/Me) is 4 gigs. If you want to create a file larger than 4 gigs you must use Windows NT/2000/XP with the NTFS file system."

Why are you rendering to avi files to make a DVD? Is that the only format that your version of Nero can handle?
You should render to aDVD-ready Mpeg 2 template , those files will be much smaller than the avi files and should not exceed 4 gigs (unless there's more than 2 hours of video)

A DVD ready MPEG 2 template is what I am looking for. The whole film is only 45 minutes long. The question is, what do I render it to and with what settings so that nero can work with it?

In Vegas 3 there should be an option in there to render to MPEG 2. Look for MP2 or MPG2 or something like that. MPEG 2 is what you're looking for. I'm not too sure about Nero, though. What version of Nero do you have? It all depends if it supports MPEG 2 or not and I would think that it would if your version of Nero is equipped to burn video DVDs it should support MPEG 2.

When I was working in FAT32 a couple of years ago, I faced the same issue. I worked around it by making sure my breaks came at fade-to-black moments in the finished video. In that way, even a momentary glitch won't be noticed.

I'm sure you can go back and do a bit of artsy re-editing to throw in a couple of such transitions--it might even be a welcome change from the usual cuts.

The dialog box for "Render as" should have "Mainconcept Mpeg 2" as an option, below that you can choose the Template-- choose DVD NTSC if available.
If those choices are not available, you may need to update your Mainconcept Mpg plugin or download the latest Vegas 3 software update (Vegas 3.0c under Support>Downloads)

The option Render as/ MPEG2 with a DVD PAL template is available but I have tried this before and Nero would not work with it. It just hung as it tried to re render it. Would the DVD Pal seperate audio and video streams template work any better?
I have the Nero express suite including NeroVision Express.
The fact that Nero tries to re render it would suggest that it is not happy with the format in the first place.

That's part of the problem, Nero re-rendering. What bitrate are you rendering your MPEG2 in Vegas? If it's too high that could explain why Nero doesn't like it. If you're rendering to a bitrate higher than 8000 Mbps try rendering your MPEG2 under 8000 Mbps and see if Nero doesn't prompt to re-render. That's the only thing I can think of because the standard bitrate is 8000 even though most newer DVD players can play up to 9800 which is the highest Vegas will render with a DVD MPEG2. So, try 8000 and below if that was the case.

I will upgrade Nero to the latest version + try again. If that does not work I will lower the bit rate + have another go.
Are there any other advanced settings I should look at changing?
If all fails I will render "loop regions" less than 18 minutes at suitable break points.

Just to clarify, 9800 kb/s is the maximum bitrate allowable by the DVD specs. However, 9800 is the bitrate of both audio and video combined.

It works. Render as worked fine and I have a 40 minute DVD with perfect sound and pictures with no gaps in it.
The solution was to upgrade to the latest version of Nero. It didn't work before, now it does.

Thanks all.
