DVD Format help

I have been burning MPG 2 files and with Nero burning it to my DVD.. It plays just great on my DVD Player but doesnt play on many others.. My family is unable to view it etc./.. It depends on the DVD Player. So I guess I can do an AVI and set it up as a movie file format.. It creates 2 folders 1 says audio_ts and the other video_TS or something like that..
Problem is though when I burn my project from the MPG 2 to an AVI uncompressed its a 30 min project winds up being 7 gig.. If i use the other formats under AVI it doesnt have sound.. My Mpeg 2 file converted to AVI uncompressed took 6 hours last night.. Anybody help me with what im doing wrong.. All this time I thought I was doing good because my DVD player and my friend that labors through them on his DVD player as my critic.. it works but not on the others.. Please help..

What kind of Dvd's are you using? DVD+R's Won't play in some of the older DVD players. DVD-R's seem to be better for most of all the older DVD players. That's my experience with DVD's

Could be the player. Not all DVD players are comfortable with recordable media.

Go to
http://www.dvdrhelp.com/

and see if your family's player is listed in the "Player Ratings" section. If so, see if anyone's tested it with DVD-R or DVD+R media. If not, or if they have and it doesn't like them, you may want to get your folks a new player. Lots of good ones out there for under $100 now.

Scotty:

Let's back up a little bit. What do you mean by "burning MPEG2 files?" Are you authoring your DVD disk in DVD-A?

The reason I ask is because making a DVD is much more involved than just putting MPEG2 files on a DVD.

im learning that.. but.. Of course I thought thats all it was,.. cause Id burn my mpeg2 file to DVD and put it into my Philips home DVD player and it worked great.. I took it to my buddys it worked great.. Now I burn a half a dozen disks pass them out and they dont work in the other players.. 3 or 4 others.. So Im confused.. what should I do?

Sounds like he's using Nero to author the disc, and het is getting to the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders so everything should be formatted correctly. First check to see how old the player is that you are trying to play it on. If you can get the model number then go over to DVDrhelp.com to check if that player should be able to play DVD-R or DVD+R discs. If it should, then most likely the problem is the media. Try to switch to a diffrent brand of media, and stick with DVD-R that will give you the best compatability. For Media Look into Verbatim, Maxell, and Taiyo Yuden, those are all top of the line discs and should correct any problems if the player is supposed to be able to play writable media.

Ok JSNKC.. your reading me right but.. It wont let me insert the MPEG2 with the right format.. only an AVI i think,.. I use DV-r and +r but get the same results.. The avi file I have burned is 7 gig though so it wont fit on a disc.. it is only a half hour video of my sisters wedding

I'm not that familiar with Nero, so I'm not sure if it is converting it to a MPEG-2 file or not. The best way would be to render out the AVI file to a MPEG-2 file in Vegas using the DVD NTSC template (or PAL depending where you are) Then you will have a MPEG-2 file. Drag that into Nero and burn it as a DVD disc and that *should* work.

You might want to look in the help file for Nero as well or check out the PDF quickstart guide here:

i was using a burned mpeg 2 file from vegas taking the file just drag and drop for ISO then of course worked for me not for others.. So i went to an AVI file start up Nero in video DVD mode instead of ISO it gives me thew audiop ts and video ts file try to insert mpeg 2 it tells me it is not a supported format.. AVI works but my 30 min AVI file is 7 gig????

Scotty:

I could be wrong, but I suspect you are trying to make a "DVD" by just dragging an MPEG2 file over to the Nero window.

A DVD is actually a much more complicated structure than that. You need an authoring program, such as DVD-A, MyDVD, DVD Workshop, DVDLab, or others. Nero also has an authoring program but I'm still not clear if you are using it or just trying to burn a disk. In any event, you can't make a DVD out of an "avi" file. It needs to be an MPEG2 file.

If you open up your VIDEO_TS folder, do you have a bunch of files inside it with names like VIDEO_TS VOB, VTS_01_0.IFO, and so forth?
