DVD Insert Label Software, Which?

Ok, peeps, my computer has risen from the dead. I'm back in business yet hell hounds still haunt my trail. My internal DVD burner fried. So I am using a USB DVD burner which is supposed to also act as a CD burner/player but so far it does not recognize any CDs. Oh well, I'll fix that later, I'm just jazzed to be making DVDs again. So...back on topic...

I bought some Avery labels to make DVD inserts (Matte White Jewel Case Standard And Slimline Inserts 8693, color inkjet), you know for the jewel case. Well each page has two inserts to to speak, you fold it and it breaks apart, and one does not fully fit the jewel front so the presentation is slightly cheezy. Ever so slight.

The template 8965 is not even in the Avery database of software templates. Get this, the page also says to use template 8693 which fortunately does exist in the software. And by "templates" I mean for printing to the Avery paper, choosing which Avery label you are going to print to. Template is probably the wrong word to use.

The software that comes in the package is called DesignPro 5 Limited. It is simply awful. It constantly either goes to "program is not responding" or it uses 100% of the CPU (a P4 1.8Ghz). This is some very poorly written software. Nothing intuative at all.

What free software you guys use for printing to preformed DVD/CD jewel inserts? And what paper? "Prefolded" or whatever you call it where you bend the paper and it seperates.

ps. the label I am making is a simple jpg file with a dozen or so words of text. Very simple. Very difficult with this useless software.

Hi Chris:

I use the software that came with my Sony burner, NTI DVD-Maker 6 Gold. There is an option to create jewel case covers. As with yours, this software is not the greatest. It is not intuitave, crashes and will have to re-enter text quite a bit as it just seems to disappear.

That being said, when I finally have a design completed, the paper used depends on the purpose of the case. If it is something just for me, then I will print on regular 20 lb. white bond paper. If it is something special, then I will print on glossy photograph paper. In either case, I cut the image out and fold it manually. By the way, I get only one image per page this way.

If I am creating a DVD case label (like the type that store bought DVDs use), I use Microsoft Word 2000. I created a template using tables so everything aligns properly on the front, back and spine. These labels are always printed on high gloss photograph paper as they are always for clients. Again, the label is manually cut out and folded.

A lot of work, but it does work.

Hey Al, feel free to send me a copy of that Word template you made :-)

chris.curnutt at gmail dot com.

I found one problem with the Avery paper, the size is wrong. An insert should be 4.75" and one of the two on each page is that size, the other is closer to 4.50" which may seem small but it makes a very noticeable difference (in a bad way).

Hi Chris:

Sent you a zip file with the template as well as a jpeg showing what it should look like (in case you don't have the same fonts as I do).

Thanks...
Al
