This might be an economical option also, though I haven't tried the printer either.

The Epson

The off brand Epson (I think)

Another Brand (except for the plus model which adds 2 more colors)

Check out the Epson website, one of their new printers, the Photo 960, comes with a tray for printing CDs. Lowest online price is around $300.

I agree that labels are not the best solution, but for the moment they will be an acceptable solution for me. I use Meritline glossy labels, applied with a Stomper tool. They are printed with an Epson C80 printer, and the results are terrific, with beautiful color, no smearing, and archival permanence (the Epson is one of just a few printers to use pigment ink for all four colors).

I suppose that the labels could come off someday. Perhaps, but I can attest that it won't happen anytime soon; that Meritline adhesive is pretty strong.

As an aside: I learned how to take labels off if you need to change the label and don't want to burn another disk:

(1). Liberally apply WD-40 to the label and let the disk sit for an hour. Don't do this indoors; that stuff stinks.

(2). Using nothing sharper than your fingernails, remove the entire label. This will be very easy to do, since the WD-40 neutralizes the adhesive.

(3). Wash the disk with warm water and soap by hand. You'll have to do this two or three times to get rid of all traces of the WD-40.

(4). Dry the disk only with a laundered cotton product.

The result will be a pristine disk, just the way it looked when you took it out of the burner. I've done this to a number of disks, and the results are perfect every time. It may work also with white ready-to-print DVD blanks, since I presume a thin label is attached at the factory (or is it painted on?). Never use a paper towel to dry the disk--it will scratch. The disk will still play, of course, but it will look unprofessional.

I would love to see a printer manufacturing company justify the thousands of dollars for a damn cd printer...by now there must be millions of burners out there, and therefore millions of ppl with an interest in printing on a cd top. Its no longer a "specialist/niche" market, so why the hell are the prices still reflecting that? Surely a market ripe for exploitation....

I just purchased the Epson Photo 960. Results are fantastic. If you know anything about their high quality photo printers then you have some idea about this one. I purchased mine from Epson directly because the tray was included in the printers beginning around February and the cd tray wasn't included in 960's manufactured before that date. You can't go wrong with this one!

That printer looks great! I think I'll get one too. Does it need to have DVDs that have a white printable surface, or can it print directly to the shiny finish of DVDs without anything on them?

Thanks,
Ron

Espon has a coupon to get the tray free if the 960 you purchased didn't come with it.

You do need the printable surface DVD's and CDR's although these are very readily availabe and cost very little(if any) more than "normal" ones

Don't waste your money on paper labels for DVD's, you will run into problems eventually, even with the ones that say they are safe for DVD's. The laser on DVD players is a lot more poerful than tat on CD players. The DVD laser causes the DVD to get hotter than a CD would causing the glue on the paper labels to come undone, causing major problems! Go with a Signature Pro, we have 3 of them and use the Verbatim Inkjet printable DVD-R's, it has worked great!

Actually, my favorite way to label DVD/CD's are with Casio's CW=50 Thermal Wax printer for less than $100. It's water proof, doesn't require special printable media, and looks sharp. You can read my own personal review at:
