DVD length

I recently recored a Made for TV movie. I want to save it in DVD format. I edited out the commercials with Vegas. When I went to write to DVD (Roxio) it said file was too big.

I know this may sound dumb to some of you... but whem writing to DVD does it look at the file size (in gigs)..or the lenth of the DVD (time). I'm assuming if it's file size.. I'll have to tweek the render settings...which is a pain becasue on this computer it takes...basiclly over nightto render something like that... so trial and error could wind up taking days..weeks..

If it's DVD length..then I assume I'll just have to edit out a scene or two. Not an artistic preference of course...

The file plays nice on Media Player... can I expect the same quality when I burn it to DVD on my TDK burner ???

THANKS!!!!

It goes by file size, not length. a DVD-R or +R will hold basically 4.37GB of data (I know it says 4.7 but it's 4.37). I usually never burn right to the outer edge becasue that can cause some playback problems. I usually try to keep the final size under 4.2 GB.

So am I right in assuming then that I'll need to go back and play with the bit rate to get the sile smaller ??

Yeah, you will have to do that. Take a look at the link that was posted above, it will give you some idea of what your bitrate should be to get it to fit on a DVD.

if you dont want to re-start and if you are close , just use dvdshrink in deep mode and shrink your project to the correct size .. it will not effect your menus and such and is extremly quick ...

But will DVDSHRINk allow you to open a file created in DVDA since by the stage the video has been rendered the files are likely to be VOB's inside TS video folders as I understand it? Is this a correct assumption on my behalf?

Yes. Shrink was designed as a backup tool to make a copy of authored DVDs, so yes, it'll do this. In fact, all of the "one click backup tools" will - Instant copy, Clone DVD, Nero Recode, etc. The cool thing about Shrink is it's freeware.
