DVD Media Test Results (scientific test)

I just purchased some Verbatim DVD-R discs on sale, media ID "MCC 03RG20". I usually purchase Taiyo Yuden, but was curious about these discs. Once I found the media ID, I did a search, and found a site that recently (April 28, 2006) performed a scientific test of fifteen different brands of DVD disc, using five different burners. They then tested the error rates using a reasonably sophisticated test machine. Here's the link to the results:

Unfortunately, the discs I purchased didn't do very well. Too bad for me. The other disappointment is that they didn't test Taiyo Yuden, so I don't know my "benchmark" media would compare in this test. Nonetheless, it was nice to finally find some recent, published scientific media tests.

thanks, very interesting data! As you know there are very few good experimental data sets published comparing DVD quality. I'd like to see info on Taiyo Yuden too, which seems the odds-on popular favorite for quality (t certainly is in my experience).

I'd be equally interested in seeing DVD longevity data but getting solid numbers there requires too much time & effort evidently.
NIST supposedly has an effort in that regard, http://www.itl.nist.gov/div895/isis/datastorage.html#writable but I haven't seen anything published by them since 2004.

More research, crunching numbers and charts.

I have been using these Verbatim inkjet printable discs since Ritek G04 inkjet printables became obsolete. I burn them in my duplicator at 2X and they are flawless. They have media ID code MCC 02RG20. I recently filled an order for 120 discs and not one return using these discs.

Mine are the MCC 03RG20 as in the article, not the MCC 02RG20 that you say you have.

Hard to stay on top of the quality curve. Why does big business change things when you find something that works?
