DVD plays back very poorly

The DVD I've burned plays back as if it's skipping and sticking in our home DVD player, and won't even be read by another DVD player we have (an XBox). The same DVD plays fine in both the PC we used to burn it and in other PCs. Our home DVD player works just fine with other DVDs. I don't understand this at all. Please advise. Did I burn the DVD incorrectly somehow?

I should add that I used Sony DVD-R that are 4x/1x and my DVD burner says it is 8x. Whatever that means!

Thanks.

I have had a lot of compatibility issues with XBox Players - They just would not play the disks I burned.

What speed did you burn the disk at? You mentioned the burner thought it was an 8X and it was a 4X. You might want to try and override the player and burn at 1X. Some people have better compatibility at this speed.

There are many issues of incompatibility depending on the media you use and the player you play on. DVDrHelp.com has databases of both player compatibility and media compatibility. This will help you see whether other people are having the same problems as you are. Using name-brand media makes a big difference. Here are links to the compatibility sites. Plug in the name of your player and the name of your media and see what others are saying.

If you burn at high bitrates, some people think that this can make the resulting disk more difficult to play on some players. I personally do not believe this, but since it is not entirely unplausible, here is a link to a discussion about the subject.

Does bitrate and burn speed affect DVD compatibility?
