-R is still the most compatable format.

For the brand I would go with either Verbatim, or if you need something a little cheaper go with Ritek. Both are very good discs and very widely used.

Did you mean "Imation" instead of "imagition"?
You can read user reviews of a lot of blank media at the Videohelp DVD Media list site.

when you buy Verbatim - you will get anything from crap to good quality media.. though lately it is more and more in the first category it seems..

Though to be fair - they also sell some extremly good media. You just have to figure out which is which ..

Verbatim uses 25 different disk manufacturers and much is it is labeled the same. see here http://tinyurl.com/45wcj

ritek quality has also been slipping but still are a good buy generally - though some suppliers are selling lower grades (there are 4 grades of ritek G04 disks) as higher grades , including newegg.

TAIYO YUDEN G01 disks are very good and easy to obtain ..

There are many other good disks also -- go through the list we maintain here; http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia (as mentioned above)

BeALL at Meritline dot com, claims to have a 100 year shelf life and that NASA and other government agencies use them. Supposedly most compatilble with more recorders too. I've only tried 50 so far and they worked okay. Almost as cheap as Ritek.

If you buy Verbatim discs from a reputable reseller then you shouldn't have any problems. We go through probably 5000-10,000 discs a month and have yet to see any problems with burning or playback on the cunsumer end. We pay a little more for the discs, but we get them from a reputable reseller.
