DVD+R convert to DVD-R ?

I have burned a DVD+R with a new HP dvd200e (bought from Amazon)

I have also recently learned (after spending $300...) for this burner, that the first two players I tried only take DVD-R disks........thus is tries to "Read" and eventually give up!

In lieu of buying yet another piece of hardware, is there conversion software or something I can buy (inexpensively..) so I can cover ALL the needed ground for a universally played disk?

All rental movie disks play regardless in any DVD player, why can't the home burned ?

Commercially produced DVDs & the discs you burn are very different and compatability rates reflect this. The brand (I'm not saying format) of disc you burn to can also affect compatability quite dramatically. You can't convert your HP drive to burn DVD-R discs if that is what you are suggesting. It would be more likely that a firmware update for your stand alone DVD player would allow it to accept DVD+R discs. (More & more modern players do accept them)

Will show +R/+RW compatability with alist of stand alone players.

I've had reasonable luck using the dvdbitsetter utility to change the lead-in written by my burner to specify DVD-ROM rather than DVD+R, you can find the utility at http://www.dvdplusrw.org/resources/bitsettings.html - the question is whether your burner supports this or not; I think they list problem burners along with other solutions/ideas.

I have a Sony DRU120A (I don't plan on ever buying another Sony burner); the firmware may have a way to specify the lead-in but Sony won't release the details about how to talk to the firmware - luckily this drive is physically a Matshita, so I flashed the Ricoh firmware onto the drive, and poof - dvdbitsetter works!
