Don't DVD camcorders compress to MPEG2 essentially instantaneously as you take the footage? If that is the case, I would be surprised if the quality of the MPEG2 encoding were very high. It's hard enough to get decent MPEG2 encoding with lots of computer time and even two-pass encoding (which would be impossible in a DVD camcorder). Am I wrong about this?

No, I don't believe you're wrong. MPEG encoded video (and AC-3 encoded audio, for that matter) will be of less quality than a DV original.

But we're also talking about different bitrates. I can get very good MPEG2 out of pretty much any encoder as long as I run the bitrate wide-open. On the other hand, I've only gotten very good MPEG2 at <4Mb/sec if I patiently encode with multiple passes in CinemaCraft.
