DVD/SDVD confusion

Ok, bear with me, I have been using tape for 20 years!
I have put together my video, rather good I think too!, I have no problems outputing back to DV. Now am looking to make one of those SVCD's. Keep in mind up too a week ago I had never even touched a DVD player!

I rendered my project to MPeg-2, then put it into Uleads DVD factory. It said that the settings did not match SVCD and said that is could convert the file, "meaning another long render". Afterwards, I had no problem making chapter points etc.

Here's the problem,
When I checked the finished file and subsquently burned it to CD, It played with rather ugly "blocking" at each transition even most cuts, also as the video plays, the audio and video loose sync. It appears the audio trails the video by about a full sec after 25:00.

My original Mpeg is perfect!

Any Thoughts? I hope to move to a DVD burner with the after xmas sales, but for now was just experimenting with my old CD burner and an early DVD player.

Phil,

My guess is the problems you saw were caused by Ulead DVD Movie Factory re-rendering your MPEG-2 into its version of SVCD MPEG-2. I think Vegas can render MPEG-2 better than Ulead. It would seem to me that the best solution would be to adjust VV3's settings and encoding to produce MPEG-2 directly acceptable and usable by Movie Factory for an SVCD. You want to prevent the re-rendering. Was your frame size 480x480? Did your SVCD files correspond to the specifications given at:

http://www.vcdhelp.com/svcd.htm

Scroll down on that page for the comparative SVCD information and links to more detailed SVCD info at the very bottom of the page.

I would use the SVCD template in VV3 to render your MPEG2 files. The MainConcept MPEG encoder in VV3 is much better than the Ligos MPEG encoder that Ulead uses. Then make sure you have the latest patches for DVD MovieFactory. The audio sync problem exists in the original version but the last patch they posted fixed it for me. If you haven’t patched DVD MovieFactory, this is the problem.

If you are rendering to SVCD in VV3, have a look at this thread too http://www.sonicfoundry.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?ForumID=4&MessageID=140288

Keep a close eye on the bitrate and use what VV-3 says to use and no more.

Phil,

Also, be aware that SVCDs are somewhat prone to some blockiness in fast transitions. Is the MiniDVD format something that your equipment could play? MiniDVD is somewhat better video quality than SVCD, but not all settop DVD players can play it. Of course, not all settop DVD players can play SVCD or even VCD.

Also MiniDVDs have shorter playing times due to their higher video detail, with perhaps 15 to 18 minutes per CD-R. MiniDVDs put full DVD quality on a CD-R or CD-RW.
