DVD size

When I take my media (rendered in VMS to mpg2) into DVDA it wants to recompress again because it will not fit into DVD. All I have is about 1 hour (total running time) of mixed photo/audio and video clips, seems reasonable to fit in 4gb dvd. Without the audio it all fits without recompression, but obviously I need the audio and would like to minimize recompression to avoid poor quality.
What am I missing or should I expect to only fit under an hour of content into a DVD?

Render your project to DV .avi. Use this .avi file in DVDA and tell it to fit to disk. That way it will use the highest bitrate possible and you'll only get one MPEG compression.

The other thing I've done is to go ahead and let DVDA do it's thing and then use a program like DVD Shrink to put the files onto a Std. DVD
