The Vegas 8.0b updated fixed an issue wherein the audio in mpeg files that contained embedded AC-3 was not recognized unless the the file extension was .vob.
DVDA 4.5 had the same problem and I initiated a communication with SCS support about it. It took several messages before it sank in, but they finally seemed to understand. In the words of Nate P. from SCS Support:
"The issue has to do with the Main Concept format and how it is showing information, but engineering is aware of the issue and it will be fixed for a future version of DVD Architect. I do not know when this will be available, but in the meantime please use the work around of changing the file name from .mpg to .vob."
Well, it ain't fixed in version 5.0.
For those not familiar with this situation, the file's extension -- be it .mpg or .vob -- determines whether or not DVDA will be able to detect the embedded audio.
While it's not a big problem to rename a .mpg file to .vob, it creates several extra steps EVERY TIME you open a media file for any reason in DVDA. Since the file, now with a .vob extension, is not recognized as a valid media file, it doesn't show up in the list of files. So you have to click in the "file types" box, then grab the scrollbar and go down the list to select "All Files" before the file will appear in the list.
While this may not affect many of you, it hits me on 90%+ of my projects and is very annoying. Please do not tell me to "Render separately to mpg & AC-3 files", as the files in question do not originate in Vegas.
