It could be a number of things, but:

1) Ensure you have the latest version of Quicktime, which plays a major role in any PC based media work

2) Ensure you have the latest Windows updates. Go manually to Windows Update and press the Custom button and manually load all updates

3) Go to your DVD burner's manufacturer's web site and ensure you have the latest firmware and drivers

It's also possible that other software on your computer is interfering with your burn. (Nero is notorious for this.) See if you can Prepare a disc successfully -- this burns your DVD files to your hard drive rather than directly to a disc. This will tell you if the problem is related to DVD Architect and your files or if it's a problem with your DVD burner.

This same thing is now happening to me. Click "Make DVD" and the program says "Not Responding".

Everything is up to date as suggested above. I even uninstalled Ulead Movie Studio11 and WinDVD8, which are the only programs uninstalled since the last time I used DVD Architect 4.5-d.

Even old projects I've made have the same result (not responding).

I can burn DVD's using other software just fine, so it's not the burner.

Any other suggestions? Thanks.

EDIT: OK, this is weird, while I was typing the note above I let DVD Architect just set there with the Not Responding message and lo and behold the rendering interface popped-up after a couple minutes. Color me confused, but it seems to be working...

Same problem.

Never had the problem before, until today. I've been using DVDA for six months and even started burning Blu-Rays with no problem.

Program freezes on "Make DVD" no matter what media I use. I even did "Make DVD" without including a media file and it froze.

The choice to actually burn or not comes a few steps after "Make DVD"

Welcome to the club. This thread has appeared many times in this forum because there is still no solution from Sony.

Depending on what version of Windows you are using, there is a bug in DVDA which can collide with another application and cause a crash, but usually it is a hardware device. If you can find the hardware it is colliding with, you can disable (not uninstall) the offending device. Players and burners are the prime suspects which can be hijacked by other applications. As pointed out, Nero is known to do this and so is Roxio.

However, there is still another bug in which DVDA goes scanning the hardware when Make DVD is invoked and can take a long time. Meanwhile, it reports " Not Responding". As long as you do not get a crash, be patient, the program will come out of Lost In Space and it will operate properly.

There is a setting in Options to select "Do not scan", but it does not seem to help much.

Another thing I've found to be an issue, and not mentioned here is the blocking of download media by Windows Security!! Check your media to make sure it is NOT BLOCKED by Windows Security.

I just upgraded my OS to Windows 7 64-bit. Vegas Movie Studio 7.0a and DVD Architect all worked great right up until I clicked "Make DVD" in Architect. It crashes and points to msvcr71.dll. I have the file in system32 and sysWOW32 so I'm not sure what's going on - any ideas?

"I just upgraded my OS to Windows 7 64-bit."

Well, that's a no-brainer.

DVD Architect 4.0 was released before Vista, and is not even "officially" supported for that OS, so how reasonable is it to expect it would work with Windows 7?

Looking into my crystal ball, I can see an upgrade in your future . . .
hip_school_preppie wrote on 7/26/2010, 8:02 AM
Alright there "no-brainer" boy. I understand the limits of compatibility, but I have come this far getting this software to work on an unsupported platform, so I figure it's worth the question - no? Vegas Studio 7.0 is rocking, as well as most of Architect - just need to cross the goal line. You've been very helpful ; )

Anyone else? I know the file is native to Visual Runtime, and I assume either the version of the dll Architect is referencing is not compatible or the registry is screwy.

Thanks in advance!

As I indicated above, there is a bug in DVDA which causes it to crash or freeze when invoking "Make DVD" for unknown reasons so far.

With Sony Support on the line, IN MY CASE, we found a collision between DVDA and my resident Blueray player. By disabling (not by uninstalling which is different) the player, "Make DVD" did not crash.

Therefore, one possible suggestion for you is to disable your local DVD players and disconnect any external devices. Then run DVDA and see if it does not crash.

Note that there is a big difference between the PC crashing and the program freezing. A secondary bug in DVDA is that, if it does not crash, it will show freezing "Not Responding" for a while. Just wait, the program will resume and you can proceed but in a different workflow, obviously.

In Make DVD use Prepare to a Folder, not Burn. Note the name and location of the folder.

With a separate burning program such as ImgBurn, etc reactivate (enable) your burners and burn the folder to a DVD disc.

I know it sucks, to put it mildly, but the other benefits of editing video in Vegas and then authoring in DVDA make it worthwhile until a root solution is found.

Good luck and please report what you find. There is a very long line of users with this problem waiting for an integral solution.

musicvid10 wrote on 7/26/2010, 12:00 PM
Slow response from DVDA, when importing from or preparing to external or network drives, is a known issue. As is slow response when dealing with very large or high-bitrate imported files.

It is my belief that a large portion of the complaints similar to the ones in this thread are the result of inexperienced and/or impatient users (who panic the instant they see "Not Responding" in the titlebar), and the use of non-optimized files and external drives for media storage or preparation.
musicvid10 wrote on 7/26/2010, 12:23 PM
"Anyone else?"

Well, here's a quote from Ed Troxel over on the DVInfo forum:

"Bottom line is that DVD Architect 4 does not support Win 7. If you want to get Win 7 support, upgrade Vegas/DVD Architect to the newest version. "

BTW, Ed is one of the most respected teaching pros on the planet, and author of Excalibur for Vegas. So please don't take my word for it (Windows 7 was released 3-1/2 years after DVDA Studio 4.0).

I was wondering if it might be an issue recognizing my Blu-Ray Burner/Player. If this solves it then that's fine, as I always use Nero to burn the DVD anyway, but having to enable/disable everytime would suck I wan to "Prepare" a DVD. My Blu-Ray player/Burner is internal. I'll see what happens.

Genuis Melachrino - I went to Control Panel > Device Manager > DVD/CD-ROM Drives and disabled my HL-DT-ST BD-RE BH30N. Shazaam! The Make DVD button didn't crash and I was able to Prepare my DVD. Me thinks we all need a patch : )

Thanks for the help!!!!

I start another copy of DVDA after the first has hung, and it works fine.
hip_school_preppie wrote on 7/27/2010, 10:57 AM
Does this same crashing issue happen with DVDA 5.0?

The kudos belong to the patient Sony Support on the phone who zeroed in on the collision and cure.

But, I agree, we need a patch fix but i have not seen one coming yet ... many others have reported similar collisions with primarily Internal Blueray players and burners. Why ? Don't know.

Hope this workaround continues to work well for you.

Yes. And with versions a and b. Mercy us. But the workaround works on these versions.

Yikes - I'm glad I didn't upgrade. If I found out I had the same issue afterwards I'd be pretty pissed.
hip_school_preppie wrote on 8/3/2010, 12:32 PM
I'm not sure if this new issue I'm coming across is directly related, but now if I try to burn a dual layer disc I'm not getting the Layer Break Selection page. I would assume this should come up even if I burn an ISO image? My burn settings are set to 8.5 GB in the options. Maybe this only comes up if you use DVDA to physically burn to disc?
hip_school_preppie wrote on 8/5/2010, 11:12 AM
Answered my own question - you do need to burn it to an actual drive to get the Layer Break page. The ISO image burner won't set this for you. I hooked up my old Pioneer Dual Layer burner which worked fine. Apparently you also need some sort of burner enabled to also get the ISO image burner option which is kinda weird.

I'm working on a fresh install of DVDA 5.0 and it started doing it from the start. This was after a fresh install of Windows Vista 64 bit.

Uninstalled, then defragged the drive, rebooted, reinstalled... same issue.

It won't even allow me to end the process. It's a hard lock up.

Sony, where are you on this one???

Two days ago I was sucessful in burning a DVD. Just a short test disc. Since then when I click on Make a DVD I get the exact error message you have pasted below. I have uninstalled and reinstalled, no help. If I setup all my preferences to save all the various file types in the same directory (my E: drive), would this cause a problem? Are there any files that I might not be aware of that are stored on my C: drive? Last, is the fix to disable my LG BD DVD burner? Any suggestions from anyone would be appreciated.

thanks,

Might be a good idea to start your own thread with this question, vance, instead of tagging onto a 7 month old thread.

You'll be much more likely to get noticed.

Also, please describe what you're using for source files and if they were prepared in an editing program, like Vegas, or taken directly from a camcorder.
