DVDA Hangs - a Lost Cause?

New to video some six months ago, I researched the competition thoroughly (I believed) before opting for VMS6+DVDA3 Platinum as my next-stage editor etc. In use, VMS seems to be adequately intuitive but with plenty of scope for experimentation and development - just what I wanted. DVDA, however, seems to be a total dud and it is most depressing to find that this forum has numerous threads along these lines, none apparently resolved.

The basic problem is that DVDA hangs 19 times out of 20 immediately on clicking 'Make DVD' or selecting this from the File menu. Even in Tutorial mode! I now find that the VMS Preferences>CD Settings tab has the same effect, except that the auto 'Scanning for...' message comes up first. There is no escape other than to reboot.

The odd twice that I have got through to a subsequent Wizard a progress message suggests that 'preparation' is completed before the thing hangs again before the burn. One single success with the VMS CD Settings tab showed the correct selection of DVD unit - a Philips SPD6000L1, which runs happily with all my other applications.

Did I miss the solution in my trawl through the forum, or didn't it actually appear?

I would of course prefer to get my complete package working properly but after many hours searching the web my expectations are low. If the DVDA element is complete write-off, being effectively inaccessible, has anyone any recommendations about an alternative DVD authoring tool, to be fed with the VMS mpg/wav files en route to dear old Nero (with InCD uninstalled, of course...)?

I have been using DVD Architect since version one and have always bought Pioneer DVD-RW drives (had the 104, 106, now the 110). You need to find out what what is wrong with your PC that makes searching for the DVD-RW drive hang. Contact Sony Tech Support, maybe they have a tool or something that could help you find the problem. It sounds like something is not configured properly with your PC.

The bottom line is: DVD Architect is NOT a "write off". It works great. We author all of the VASST Trainig DVD's with DVD Architect as well as provide training for DVD Architect so I can assure you it works fine.

Never had a problem with DVDA, and it has no problem with any of my DVD writers (BenQ/Philips, LG, Pioneer, or Lite On).

There must be something else in your system that is causing the problem. YOu could try this (for Win XP)... Sorry, it's a little technical.

Right-click My Computer and select Manage
From the list that appears, expand DVD/CD ROM Drives , right-click your DVD drive and select Disable and confirm to your system that you do wish to disable it.

Then try DVDA. If it works, then we know there is most likely an issue of some kind with the DVD drive.

If you are using a motherboard that has an nVidia or or Via, then make sure you are not using the IDE drivers supplied by these companies. It is better to use the Microsoft supplies drivers.

good luck,

Worley

Thanks for that, both. I will explore as suggested.

Might also double check .NET & trash Incd.
