DVDA Not For Me

Jimco wrote on 2/16/2003, 12:58 AM
I am making this post just so that SoFo will know what one customer thinks.

I like DVDA, but there are a couple of things that are stopping me from purchasing it:

1. I can't burn on non-blank DVD+RW discs. I have the same issue that many others are reporting. Ulead products burn on the same DVD+RW and drive fine, so I don't think it's a firmware issue.

2. I get no timecode on my DVD player when playing video burned with DVDA. Looks like the chapters are not lining up on I-Frames and the encoding used doesn't allow for time display on the player. This is a show-stopper for me.

I'm not trying to dissuade anyone else. I love SoFo products (Vegas is best hands-down), but I just don't find DVDA to be as polished as I had hoped.

Yep, i Noticed No. 2 as well...all my pioneer dvd player shows on its screen is "play"...when it should be showing my track , index no. and time....

I would like to add a "No. 3" point...No option to make a DVD with several movies/tracks...without a menu. If we dont want a menu, we can only add one movie file? pretty limiting....

As for number 2 there is a workaround. See previous threads regarding time display. Hopefully SOFO will make an update, if not and until then, what you have to do is editing one of the ifo-files (use ifoedit, a freeware program).

That's encouraging. Unfortunately, I'm not willing to wait to upgrade Vegas while I wait on a DVDA patch! :) I sure wish DVDA was available separately. That way, I could purchase it once it met my needs.

As it stands, I'm sticking with Ulead for now. It has always been extremely reliable for me.

Once again, not trying to criticize SoFo! I am upgrading Vegas today and also have Acid Pro on my short list. No doubt that SoFo products are incredible! I needed a music generation program for my DVDs. I did tons of research, and many people said FruityLoops is the product to buy. I admit that a lifetime of free upgrades looked good to me. However, after downloading the demo of it and the demo of Acid, there is simply no comparison. After several hours of using FruityLoops, I was still sitting there scratching my head. Within minutes of installing Acid, I was creating music and having a blast.

Thanks for the more info...

You can upgrade to Vegas4.0 right now, and upgrade vegas4.0 to vegas+DVD later. If you compare prices, you would look pretty silly doing so. No problems with time display here (Sony burner / Daewoo player, all PAL). No problems with burning over used +RW media (Sony).

OK, let me ask you to do this?

Does your DVDA burned DVD play correctly on your PC? Using what playing software?

Does your DVDA burned DVD have the correct file date and time stamps (that is, do they match what's in your prepared directory on your hard disk?

If so, then I need to know your secret!

rstein, why burn using DVDA at all? I figure the authoring program should be good at AUTHORING. I always use the burning software that came with my drive (Prassi PrimoDVD) to burn to the drive. I figure the burning software should be good at BURNING. If Nero is working, I don't understand what the problem is. Besides, if you need more than one copy, it is faster to use DVDA to build the subdirectories and then use the burning software to burn multiple copies.

@rstein,
the DVD+RW plays on my desktop, with PowerDVD (bundled with the Sony),with full functionality, including first play video, Menu, with time display, and the time stamp on the files is quite in line with the time the burn started. It is the right day and approximately the right time (somewhat past midnight), and I didn't stay up to watch the progress bar. No secrets, just plain Win2k SP3 on a P4 2.4. I encoded in Vegas4.0 in 16:9 format (DVDA-Template) and AC3 Stereo. DVDA nevertheless started some reencoding, that is where I left it and went to sleep.
Same with -RW and +R, did a mixed setup in DVDA with DV-AVIS and preencoded MPEGS/AC3s, 4:3 this time -> no reencoding of the media prepared with DVDA template.
On the other hand we tried the disks on my son's desktop in an elderly Creative Labs DVD player. +RW and +R work, but not too well, the machine takes it's time to recognize and start media. -RW was a flop, didn't start. Software is WinDVD3.0, so there might be better performance with an update.
In my opinion DVDA is easier to use than DWS and has the better interface, but then I'm an addict of SoFo software and may be somewhat biased.

Right, I'm no longer burning with DVDA. I'm using RecordNowDx and that seems to work OK, with playing behaviour about as expected compared to the preview within DVDA and running the prepared \VIDEO_TS directory off the hard drive.

There are definitely some anomalies with the burn part of of DVDA.
