DVDA Studio 4 & ac3

Will DVDA Studio 4 encode audio to ac3, or does it only support import of ac3 audio?

If DVDA Studio 4 will encode audio to ac3, and I import an mpeg-2 video stream and PCM audio that combined exceed the disk size (which which would not exceed the disk size if the audio were ac3), will studio reencode the PCM to ac3 without reencoding the mpeg-2, or will it reencode both audio and video?

I do not believe that DVDA (or DVDA Studio) will re-encode the audio. None of mine have been re-encoded, anyway.

So, I suspect it only supports the import of AC-3. You would have to encode using Vegas (I don't know if Vegas Movie Studio encodes to AC-3).

Regarding regular DVD Architect, it mostly certainly will encode AC3 audio -- if a) your project is configured to use AC3 for that particular piece of audio or the project itself is configured to use AC3 audio and b) that particular piece of audio is brought in as something other than AC3.

Unfortunately, I'm not exactly sure of the DVDA Studio's capabilities since I don't have it. Sony's product description seems to suggest that AC3 encoding is possible in the Vegas Movie Studio + DVD Platinum edition, but I don't know if it's only Vegas that can do it or both of them.

If DVDA Studio will encode the audio to AC3, you need not worry about it re-encoding the video. It'll just "rip" the audio from the file, encode that, and then stitch everything back together. It won't mess with the video. (Not because of the audio, anyhow. If your video isn't in the right format for the DVD, that's another story.)

I downloaded the DVDA4 Studio Trial a few weeks ago. Based on the Trial, it can encode AC-3 and AC-3 5.1.

Also, if both vide/audio are already compliant -- you can elect to have it just encode the audio...
