DVDA2-TDK840G +R burn error, no -R support

I have been using this burner without incident in DVDA1. I also have burned 1 previous project to +R without problem @ 8X in DVDA2.

I was attempting to burn a project to DVD+R 8X today, and it aborted about 80% through with the following error:

Dialog Box:
The Command Completed Without Errors

The details button shows:
'SFMMCX'-(17)
'atapi'-(3)
-'TDK DVDRW840G 1.06'-(0)
Module sfmmcx.cpp Line 1455
The command completed successfully.
No sense.

Status: 00000000
Command:
Sense: 00 00 00
Info: 00 00 00 00
Specific: 00 00 00
Extra:

Well, the error is correct - this message makes no sense ;-)

There is data written to the disc, but it is unreadable on the PC and on 2 standalone players and my standalone DVD recorder.

SInce the folders were already prepared, I used Nero 6 to burn the DVD folders, and it burned fine, and the disc plays fine everywhere.

I tried to burn the project in DVDA2 again, this time to a DVD+RW at 2.4x, and it burned fine - no errors. I burned one project already, at 8X DVD+R, with no problems.

That project was about 4GB in size. The project I did today was about 1.54GB in size. But that shouldn't matter, right?

The other thing is, DVDA2 will not recognize -R and -RW discs. If Iplace one of these in the drive, the speed selection in the burning window is blank. Atempting to burn results in an immediate failure. If the disc is in the drive when I start DVDA2, there is "no device found" in the recorder option. Does DVDA2 NOT DO -R(W)? I had not tried -R(W) in DVDA1, so I don't know if this is DVDA2 specific. But both Nero and DVD Workshop 1 and 2 did the -R(W) discs fine.

Again, I burned the project in Nero 6 with a -RW disc, and it burned fine.

I tried both with and without the database set in preferences, but both problems were still there.

I generally burn to 4X +R anyway, since I can get 8X out of them, but I do have an abundance of 4x -R discs I would like to utilize.

I cannot get DVDA1 to burn a -R disk on my "lite on 812S" either(+R works fine). A number of posts regarding "lite on" drives have stated they can't burn -R discs either. Has anyone had success burning -R discs with DVDA2.0 on ANY drive including sonys?

I just checked the specs, and -R, -RW are listed as supported. Hmmm...

I have the Plextor 708UF and cannot get DVDA2 to recognize "-" discs, even though they are listed as compatible with the burner on Plextor's website (seems that would make this a Sony problem in having universal problems recognizing "-" media. I hope that Sony will address this issue soon.

I ran into a similar problem - same TDK 8x drive. Burned several DVD-RW discs, then, tried to burn a -R disc - no recognition by DVDA2 - when I get to the screen where I should name the volume, select the burn speed, no device is showing or selectable. Burn speed box is blank. I can type in a volume name, I can click finish, then receive an error that the "message is missing."

Put in a +R disc, all is well again.
