4 + hours for one clip.. yikes... i shot some more on my t2i today.. imported the clips and went away, came back, still not down (almost thought) and it has almost been 5 hours! the clip is only 600 mb in size.. (the difference is i am shooting 1280 at 60fps
before i was 1920 at 30 fps and 24fps

this is insane though... 5 hours, for one clip?
anyone else seeing this?

(i have it set to the same settings as before... 1/4 size, low rez proxy, nothing else checked...)

Epic demo 1.0.2 was released yesterday and it now works with Win 7 64bits.

So I was able to test drive the demo and so far I am very impressed. You must get used to this workflow but once you sorted it out, it's great.
Did several renders with fx and transitions and also mixed some raw EX1 footage and it rendered just fine.

I also did another test where I have copied my project onto another computer that didn't have Epic installed. So I doubled click on the .veg and the project open without requesting anything.
I find this really great, meaning that if Epic is not installed, it is referencing to the original Canon footage and as technology evolves, this same archived project could be opened years later on a more powerful machine and would still be referenced to the original footage. You could then delete all your proxy folders and work with the available technolgy then.

Still have several test to do, but for the time being, I believe this is one of the best if not the best and most affordable solution there is right now, and it is also a time saving and disk space saving solution, at least in my case!

I am having veeerrrry slow render times for 60p files on Win 7 64. Unusably slow. Seems there is a problem according to support.

I like the program but it's not ready for Win 64-bit yet.

Version 1.0.3 is released which fixes that problem (was only affecting 60P files).

Epic has been tested successfully with Vista 64 and Windows 7 64 as well as
the 32-bit versions of those OS.

Normally you get real-time playback on a clip within about a minute after dropping it
into the timeline. During that time you can scrub, change in and out points, and
do most editing tasks.

I just gave the program another try. With my Canon SX-1 IS, Epic builds the proxies, but doesn't ever switch to them. Will Epic work with this camera? Format-wise the footage is very similar to that of the Canon DSLRs.

Also, it would be really cool if this program worked with all Quicktime clips. For example, a bunch of us are collecting stock footage from the Artbeats "clip of the day" promotion. These are all HD Quicktime mov format. Many cameras besides the Canon DSLRS these days have HD modes that are clips in mov format (Kodak, Sanyo, etc). All these Quicktime based clips could benefit from DVFilm Epic.

Installed, started Vegas, splash screen comes up and stalls and hung indefinitely at "Creating file I/O manager". Worked fine just a half hour ago before installing. =/

Uninstalled Epic, Vegas started fine.

Anyone having problems with the demo should contact DVFilm Support- I think they are able to resolve most problems and its a free service. Unfortunately too difficult to do it through this forum,

It does work with the SX1 samples we have here. If its not using the proxies, make sure the project frame size is the same as the clip frame size, and you are in Preview-Half or Epic Red,

It will work with all fixed-GOP quicktime files (where the I frames are spaced at regular intervals) and any intra-frame compressed quicktime files such as ProRes or MJPEG or (if you have Raylight Decoder) DVCPROHD. That should include all cameras. At some point we can make it work with H.264 quicktimes that do not come from a camera. If you have footage send it to our support group.

I think what is happening is the Epic demo puts up a dialog at that point and somehow the dialog is behind the splash screen. You can click on Epic in the Win taskbar to bring it forward-- not sure why its doing that on your system.

Re-installed to check your suggestion and that does not appear to be the case. From all of my clicking there does not seem to be anything behind it, Vegas simply hangs indefinitely at that point when Epic is installed leaving me with the only option to control+alt+delete and kill Vegas, uninstall Epic, and restart Vegas.

Purchased Epic and really happy so far.
Conversion to 60P from Canon has been fixed.

Got some 450 shots on the timeline, over an hour and a half, all I did shoot with my T2i so far! Several fx and transitions.
Rendered few minutes and all went fine.

Still experimenting on some workflow. I now leave the show quality window set to high at all times. If playback chokes on the native .mov, which it will after a second or so, it automatically switch to the proxy on playback.

Brilliant plugin, again, I think this is the best and cheapest alternative, and let's you render from the original.

DVFilm Epic I release 1.1 is out. This plugin now supports direct DSLR real time editing
without transcoding for:

Vegas 9 32-bit
Vegas 9 64-bit
Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10.

http://dvfilm.com/epic

The next release (1.2) will also support older versions of Vegas Pro and Movie Studio.
That should be ready in a few weeks.

This is great plug but it is a shame that it ONLY works with mov files and not M2TS files.

Are there any plans in the future to support other HD file types?
mvb wrote on 7/17/2010, 8:03 PM
Yes, Epic II is planned which will handle stream files as well.
