edit history

after cutting from my marked raw footage track and pasting to a subclip track for some time, it has come to my attention that the raw footage track is all messed up and missing some sections. undoing the edit history would destroy all subclips that i have put together. is there some other way to get the original raw footage track back?

If you used the 's' (split function) on the timeline to cut your source clip, and then took out some of the split sections, you can simply go back to the source track and drag the edge of the clip, extending it in the direction you want. You could extend it all the way in both directions to show the entire source clip again; you could do the same with any of the broken out 'subclips'.

Why not just drag a new copy of the raw footage track to your timeline?

i can't just make a new copy because it was all marked and regioned. even when i re-extend with the scroller, my marks stay messed up, and it still won't scroll all the way back out.

We're not talking about making a copy. Simply drag the original .avi file onto the timeline again.

also, i thought that i could drag my master edit to a new vegas window, and then back up the edit history until i had my original logged footage all over again, but it won't let me drag and drop. it won't let me cut and paste either. what is the method for doing this?

It sounds like you may not understand that Vegas is non-destructive with respect to the original source media. When you edit, you are not actually chopping the source files up or changing them in any way. Just save your edited project as is; it doesn't alter the source media. You can open a new project and start over again with the original clip any time you want. Or, as has been mentioned, re-insert the original clip into your current project. I must admit however that it's not clear to me what you are trying to accomplish.

looks like one of my posts didn't make it...

i can't just start with the source video from scratch. i had hours of logging on that first track of video. if i start over, the marks are gone. what i need is to revert the raw footage track all the way back in the edit history somehow without screwing up the master edit, which i am doing on the second track. i tried to just paste that second track to a new vegas timeline, thus leaving nothing but the chopped up, logged raw footage on track 1... but it won't let me move anything out of the program. do i have to render it or something?

How about saving your current edit with a new filename, say Version01.veg, then undo as much as you need within the current project to get back to where you want, and then save again as Version02.veg? You can render any portions of your project to a new *.avi and insert it into another project if that is what you are asking.

Also, according to one of your posts in another thread, you set markers and regions in the Trimmer. You can save these with the media file if you enable the check box under: Options > Preferences > General > Automatically save trimmer markers and regions with media file. This might help if you have a similar workflow in the future.

i tried to render to a new track, but the video came out black. is there a special process to doing this?
