editable files

Question...

What file formats am I able to import to the VMS timeline so I can edit them? Let's say I don't even have a camcorder, and someone is going to send me their footage to edit. Should he send it as a .wav, .mov, mpeg?

Which would give me the best quality? Is it possible that he copy said file to a DVD/CD, from which I can rip it and then edit?

The preferred format for video files is DV .avi and for audio only is .wav. As long as the CD/DVD is burned as a data disc it's just like having the files on a hard drive. There's no need to rip them since you can just copy them to your hard drive. DV .avi files are about 225MB per minute so a CD can hold about 3 minutes of video and a DVD can hold about 21 minutes.

Other than that, Vegas Studio can import just about anything except Real. MOV needs the Quicktime drivers from Apple. MJPEG and MPEG4 require drivers available for free from several places.

The other thing to consider is what format the sender has the clips in already. If it's avi from a camcorder, it's best to keep it the same format. But, as stated above, you can only fit about 21 minutes on a DVD - the files are huge.

If it's converted to mpeg before it's sent to you, you'll lose some quality when you import into VMS, and then again when you export to mpeg if you're going to DVD.
