. Now that a drone is nearly expected on the job, I finally succumbed to the craze.
I'm a cinematic shooter and editor and now I find myself stuck on how to edit drone shots into
a sequence. In the dark ages I was taught not to cut during a move, say a pan from left to right. Start at the beginning and cut at the end.
You relied on the cameraman to give you usable start/stop points and the appropriate length of shot. With a drone good start/stop points are very tough to achieve. Plus the shots tend to be very long. I can always edit using dissolves, but dissolves don't usually display very well on the internet. I also find a dissolve between two moving pictures distracting.
There is a TV series named Aerial America. They usually dissolve between locations and simply cut between shots at that location. It works OK I guess but to me the cuts are very jarring. Shot moves left, shot moves right, etc.
If these were action sequences that would be much easier, I'm talking about exterior scenic type shots.
Any methods and or examples of more cinematic or at least less visible techniques?
Or do I change my long ingrained style!
