Editing from .mp4

Client wants some lower thirds, cuts, intro chopped and replaced etc.
Project is four years old and I've looked everywhere for the .veg file, but with no success.
Is there a way I can drag the.mp4 file onto the timeline, edit it and re-render without a lot of degradation?
Thanks in advance for forgoing the lecture about backing up files.
Self flagellation seems to be doing the trick nicely.

Mp4 is just a container much like avi, mov, or mxf. It doesn't tell us anything about the video compression used. Is it h264 or mpeg2 (like in XDcam mp4)?

if it's a hq mp4 just do what you have to do and call it quits.

the degradation on one generation will probably be quite insignificant....

Well an XDcam mp4 is actually mpeg2 compression and could be smart rendered.

This was shot with a Panasonic HPX 170 720 30p, using P2 cards and rendered to Main Concept mp4..avc template in SVP 12.
That any help?
