I was looking to get a laptop computer to edit video and was curious to what others may be using. Looking for something on the Windows platform that wont break the bank. Any help or advice would be appreciated.
Proxy editing is your friend with laptops. XDCAM-EX, Cineform, or even 16x9 DV are good low over head codecs for proxing higher end HD and 4K material. If you go to low with your CPU and video, you will run into problems even editing those.
Rule of Thumbs:
CPU 4 cores minimum, more is better.
4-8GB of RAM per CPU Physical core. I would tend to just max the laptop memory out of the gate.
Samsung Pro series M2 or SSD for Boot.
Preferably a good IPS screen and not a TN panel. OLED if you can afford it.
AMD GPU, but do not expect desktop timeline acceleration performance from it.
USB3 external SSD media for project editing, or SanDisk Extream PRO thumb drives. Add USB thumb drives as needed and stick them a drawer instead of managing project space. Unless your projects are long form and exceed the storage space.
