Editing on the Timeline

I downloaded the VF demo to try it out and couple of things struck me as odd. My capture clips didn't go directly to the timeline. I had to drag each of them up to the timeline in sequence. It was a short 2 minute test so this wasn't a big deal, but is there a way to get it to automatically put the captured material directly into the time line? Also, how do you avoid creating holes in your movie? I dragged a clip near the beginning and none of the clips to the right came with it, leaving a hole in the movie. There must be a way to change that, and have it be the default behavior.

I have a feeling that having captured clips go directly to the timeline wouldn't be very useful in most situations. In most cases, the clips won't be in the correct order as you capture them, so your first step would be to remove them all from the timeline and start over anyway.

To get rid of the hole, turn on Ripple Edits under options, doubleclick in the hole (it will now be highlighted blue) and press Delete. You can also "select events to end" and drag them all together.

Click on Ripple editing. This way anything to the right of the target clip gets pushed further to the right when you Add stuff - and, yup you guessed right - if you delete anything to the right of the Target clip, all clips get "pulled" towards the target clip. Simple eh! Took me sometime to figure it out with the good people here to help me.

Rippling is useful, as you can ellect to "make" a hole in a timeline or close everything up.

Hammer, do a search on Ripple editing in this Forum - Have fun!

Thanks for the info. I thought I had clicked on ripple editing in the menu last night but didn't notice any difference. Probably did it wrong. On the first question, I take it there is no way to have it auto-populate the time line? I'm mostly doing home stuff shot in order and it's lot easier to delete a few clips than it is to add 20 or 30. I can't stand long shots so I tend to make a lot of clips even in a short video.

It's not really an auto populate, but you can hit CTRL-A in the Media Pool and that will select all of the clips. Then drag this to the timeline and it will drag all clips in the order.

You can also Lasoo a whole of clips. I've just dome it with a load of stills.Hold down the left mouse button, and highlight them as you would if you were selecting a load of files in Windows Explorer. A neat trick is to sort them by "Created/Modified" first so, in a sense, you get them in sequence of capture or frame grab.

The key thing no one has mentioned yet is that in order for ripple edits to work the way you want, you must select a time range, either by double-clicking on an event, or by holding the left mouse button and dragging the mouse in the blank area above the timeline. If you merely select an event and press delete, without also selecting a time range, then that event will be deleted, but the events to the right will NOT fill the resulting gap.

This behavior still drives me nuts, especially since I started with Studio 7, where the events are always automatically joined up, unless you REALLY work hard at locking them in position. The toughest thing to get the hang of with VideoFactory is that the object of an editing command (like Delete) is determined by the combination of which events are selected, and what range of time (if any) you have selected.

I wish SF would change this behavior, because even for an experienced user, it requires uncessary steps for most operations.
