Editing problem

I have been editing with Vegas Movie Studio (Platinum 11.0) for several years with no problems. Resently while editing a short video I started to get a red flash that covered the preview window on a few places on the timeline. Occasionally the screen will go red and stay that way until I stop the video. Although the points where the red flash occurs are similar each time, they are not always exactly the same. I've examined my edit points and nothing appears to be different from other points that are not having the problem. What could be causing this?

Have you gone to the nVidia or ATI web site and ensured you have the latest updates for your video card? You'd be surprised how often this alone fixes these types of problems.

Also, have you ensured you have the latest version of Quicktime from Apple, per the program's requirements?

What model of camcorder is your original video coming from and what format and resolution is it?

Hello Steve,
Thanks for answering my question. I've done all you suggested, updating and checking out my video card and getting the Quicktime update. I still have the problem. Is it possible I have a corrupted file or files that are causing the problem? It is like the program is crashing. The two types of media I'm using is coming from an older JVC camcorder that is not HD and video from a Go Pro Hero black camera. I used Brorsoft video conversion on the Go Pro clips turning them into MPEG 2 HD video files.

Use free GoPro Studio to convert your Hero footage.
The other one you mentioned is unknown to me.

Is your JVC is miniDV camcorder or does it have a hard drive? What model of camcorder is it?

There are hundreds of models of JVC camcorders, and it's hard to make a recommendation without knowing more specifics about your media.

Also, what are your Video Project Properties? Have you set up your project to Match Media and, if so, which media files are you matching your project settings to?

Also converting your video with a program like Brorsoft's is defnitely NOT recommended! Unless you know what exact specs you're outputting, you could actually end up making your video LESS rather than more compatible.

With Go Pro footage, I'd recommend either using it as is (most current video editors can digest it just fine) or taking musicvid's advice and using the Go Pro software to convert it (though that shouldn't be necessary).

The two main causes of red frames are memory depletion and decoder issues.
