Try the file / import / dvd camcorder disc function. That will convert the VOB files into .mpg files. It will still be slow, but it may be a bit more reliable.

If you're going to be doing LOTS of cuts and editing you may want to consider rendering the .mpg file to DV .avi, then working with the .avi version. This will make the editing process go a lot faster. However, you'll also have to spend the time to do the initial render, which may eat up any benefit.

If you use VirtualDub-MPEG2 to do the conversion, you can also use it to cut out the bits you don't want - that'll save a lot of time.

Is there a batch conversion tool that will convert the VOB files to .AVI ?
