What exactly do you want to do to the text?? I think you need to be a little more specific.

You edit the text using the same tool that you used to create (type in) the text in the first place... although I think you would have figured that out already if that was what you were really trying to do. Or.... have you just read about how you make effect changes to text but you have not actually created any text yet? Or have you created the text and you now do not know how to re-edit it?

If that really is the case (you have not found the method of creating text in the first place) you have to use the "Text" Plug-in in the "Media Generators" section. Just select the "Text-Plugin" and select one of the "preset" sample text object and drag it onto the timeline. At this point you can enter your own text and make any changes to placement, style etc etc.

Once it is on the timeline you can re-edit your text by clicking in the dark grey "box" on the top right section of the event (below that is the Pan-Crop tool box and below that is the "FX" box)

Does that help?

One somewhat annoying problem with entering large amounts of text in Vegas is the window itself is by default rather small and the default text size is a silly 72 points. If you arrage the bottom windows having media generations as one of the tabs and having that place holder set to occupy about a third of the width then to bring back the text area to easily modify/add text, all you need to do it click on the top icon (media generated) on any event that's media generated like the default text presets are.

Since you normally probably want text to "float" over your video, you begin by creating a new overlay track above your default video track, then from the media generations tab, select text and one of the presets. What I do is just drag and drop it on the overlay track after I add one.

Maybe you're not looking at the actual text generator work area?

Lets go really slow...

1. start a new project.
2. click on the Media Generations tab.
3. click on text, then select the first preset you see called default text
4. Click on the preset and drag it into the track area and just let go.

At this point on the timeline you should see a checkerboard dark and light gray box with with text saying sample text. If you move your cursor over it and click you should see the same in the preview window.

Notice the three icon on the single event on the timeline. Click the top one it should open the Video Meida Generator below the track area. If it does you should see a white background box with black letters saying Sample Text in 72 point Arial.

Clicking in this workarea the cursor should change to a flashing vertical line. If you place your cursor behind the last character and then click on the backspace key you can erase "sample text' and replace it with whatever you want to say.

The other tabs effect where within the frame the text is, the effects you wnat to apply and so on.

Going on...

Once you see the text you typed, click on the placement tab. Move your cursor over the text, it changes to a hand cursor, You can move it up and down, etc or just pick a preset to center, align left, right... The X, Y values are updated in real time when the text will appear within the frame.

The properties tab allows you to change color, scaling, tracking and leading. Which is sizing the text and the space between lines and letters. The effects tab allows you to add a drop shadow and stuff like that.

Lastly, once you know how to do simple text you can try one of the presets for fancier effects.

Beyond that, you can download Satish's free 3D plug-in pak which allows 3D effects and other goodies.

The previous descriptions sound too complicated.

From a new project:

1) Click anywhere in the timeline.
2) Right click and select "insert video track" (Usually, as BillyBoy suggests, above the highest existing track so the text will appear over your video)
3) Click in the new track, right click and select "insert text media"

The text box comes up. You can now type away and modify as needed.
