Editing VOB files directly

I recently purchased a Philips DVDR985 DVD Recorder to convert my home movie VHS tapes to DVD. I am looking for some suggestions for working better/faster with VOB files.

I have been through all of the DVD2AVI & TMPGEnc and FlaskMPEG demuxers/decoders etc and everything is just so time consuming. AVI files decode faster, but the file sizes are just immense (using uncompressed codecs).

Can anyone recommend a clean path for working with VOB files without having to render until my computer craps out from overworking!?!? If I am stuck with encoding, is it better to go with AVI, or should I continue to try to work in MPEG2 format? What about converting to DV format?

Question for SonicFoundry: Any support for VOB files in the near future? (Incidentally, I dropped a VOB file in VV3 and it did bring it up, but the audio (AC3) appears not to be supported. So, it doesn't look like it would take that much of an effort to work with them, even if you don't support multi angle and separate audio tracks for a while, something is better than nothing.)
