edl's and chopping

two aggrevating questions, to which i've still not had satisfactory answers (and my apologies to mike k. and others who've tried to sort me out)....

a. how do i enter an edl?
the situation is; my client comes to me with a paper cut, compiled from an assortment of tapes. i simply want to type in the i/o's and tape numbers into vegas, and then batch capture?

b. what use is the trimmer?
the situation is; i have a half hour interview, from which i need a number of short grabs. i don't need to keep the whole tape, just the takes i want, and have access to them as i would have any other media i work with.

other than that, i am finding v4 a very useful addition to my es7, which i've used happily for almost 8 years without a single crash / problem.... it's just the above two problems that cause me so much grief...

This can be done although it isn't super elegant. Type in the i/o timecodes in the video capture tool (naming the tapes as you go), batch capture. Now you have files with the correct timecodes.

From there sort the files in Vegas's media pool as they were in the paper list, using the comment field to label the cuts 001,002,003 etc. Now you have the sort order, select all, drag to timeline, tweak as needed.

isn't is it.

forgive my blundering on; but exactly how do you enter times?

with/without tape in? if i try entering times there's nowhere that says 'add' or the like?

thanks for your patience

In the Capture Utility, Click on the Advanced Capture tab.

Put tape X into the deck or camcorder and type in the name. Enter the timecode in and out, then click on Log in/out and repeat for all your clips on that tape.

Hit capture in/out to capture the defined segments (or wait till you have all the tapes logged).

Do the same for each tape.

gary, many thanks for your reply.

however;

when i enter an 'in' tc as you suggest, then click to enter an 'out', my in jumps to the inserted tapes position. no matter how i try, out first, et al, it continues to change my previous entry.

am i missing something obvious?
