I have someone coming in with a .edr file on a portable hard drive. I have never heard of this type of file - will I be able to drop it onto Vegas for editing?

Most likely this is a SolidWorks Edrawing file. It's CAD.
What you should do is tell them the formats you can import, and probably just recomend that they bring you a hi res bitmap file like a PNG. If you have a decent image editor like photoshop then they could bring you a tiff and you could convert it. Vegas will take tiffs but not as easily as png.
Since it's a CAD file they may want to generate a really big image, another reason to use photoshop to make some scaled down copies for Vegas. Vegas will probably choke on images over 8k px wide.
If I'm right about this format, it's exotic enough that you shouldn't feel responsible for importing it. They need to provide something else.
